Third–person POV:

Laila lowered her voice, her gaze fixed on Chloe’s face. “But that obviously isn’t the real reason you stopped us.”

“No.” Chloe shook her head. A flush of shame rose across her cold, distant features. “Mrs. Knight ordered me to ruin the relationship between you and Prince Vance.”

She bowed slightly. When she lifted her eyes again, they were already brimming with tears. “Please help me.”

“Why should I help you?” Laila asked evenly.

She had seen the tears in Chloe’s eyes, but tears didn’t always mean sadness. Sometimes, they were just another weapon.

Chloe lowered her voice further, speaking faster now. “Let’s make a deal. I can tell you everything I know—”

Samuel didn’t respond immediately. He glanced at Laila, waiting for herto speak first.

“How many siblings do you actually have?” Laila asked.

She knew Estelle had arranged many breeder she–wolves for Hugo. But outsiders had never seen those women, nor the children they gave birth to.

As for how many children there actually were, no one knew.

“I don’t know how many were born, but there are eight still alive.” Chloe paused, her voice lowering further. “As for brothers… none. Every male baby was strangled to death after birth.”

Viola’s anger exploded instantly. “What about your father? Hugo didn’t stop it? Those were his sons!”

“Stop it?” Rage flashed across Chloe’s face. “He couldn’t. And he didn’t want to provoke the princess either. He was terrified she’d take her anger out on the Knights.”

‘I seriously don’t get it. Can’t someone report this to His Majesty?”

Hatred thickened in Chloe’s eyes. “Estelle is ruthless. She never leaves evidence behind. Without proof, His Majesty would never believe it.”

‘That’s right,” Chloe continued. “In the Frostfang Pack, the one truly in control is Estelle. She’s an Alpha herself. For some reason, her wolf spirit power is terrifyingly strong. My father can’t compete with her.”

Suddenly, Samuel remembered something from years ago.

‘One Christmas,” he said, “I saw Hugo behind the rock garden. He was alone, drank out of his mind, crying. I was still young then. Maybe because he was so drunk, he grabbed me and talked about things at home. He said one of the breeder she–wolves gave birth to a child and argued with Estelle over something. Estelle picked up the baby and smashed it to death on the spot. The breeder disappeared not long after.”

Silence fell over the room.

Viola clenched her fists so tightly that her knuckles cracked.

Smashing a newborn baby to death? How vicious did someone have to be to do such a thing?
