It took Samuel a long while before he finally forced his emotions back down. “On behalf of General Conlay, welcome back to the ranks.”
Eight men survived.
No one knew the storm raging inside his heart at that moment.
The men covered their faces. Tears seeped through their fingers, but not one of them dared make a sound.
They would never forget that they were Kain’s soldiers.
Right then, an incredibly weak voice came from the ground.
“Wil… William Arnold… is reporting in.”
Samuel jerked his head down.
A trembling hand lifted weakly into the air, barely raised at all.
Samuel grabbed it tightly in both hands.
Willy opened his eyes. More accurately, only one eye opened. The other was swollen into a thin slit.
His face was bruised black and blue. His nose was crooked, the corner of his mouth split open. The left side of his face was swollen higher than the right, and his right eye was even worse than the left. He barely looked human anymore.
He was terrifyingly thin, only skin and bones.
And yet that skeletal body was covered in wounds from head to toe.
As Woodrow treated Willy’s injuries, tears kept streaming down his face.
Willy’s body was covered with burn scars from branding irons and whip marks. His fingernails had been ripped out, and there were tiny holes left behind from steel needles repeatedly piercing through flesh.
All ten fingers were swollen as overripe fruit. They were inflamed red and covered in festering blisters layered on top of each other.

Willy grinned.
It was a painful, crooked grin.
That once handsome face was now completely unrecognizable.

Samuel didn’t dare look at Willy’s smile and face. It felt like a mountain was crushing his chest so hard that he couldn’t breathe.
He turned and walked outside.
Sitting at the doorway, he lifted his head to stare at the moon hanging high above.
The road home was still very far away.
But no matter what, he would bring every single one of them back.
No one would be left behind.
After Samuel finally steadied his emotions, he heard Terrence asking Luke, “Are my parents and my wife all right? What about my brother, Finneas?”
Luke fell silent for a moment before deciding to tell the truth. “They’re all doing fine. It’s just… they all believed you died in battle. Your wife has already formed a new mate bond with someone else.”
He didn’t want to lie to Terrence.

Rather than letting him return home full of hope only to face reality later, it was better to tell him now.
At least he could prepare himself emotionally.
Terrence stayed silent for a very long time.
He lay on the ground with both arms folded beneath his forehead, burying his entire face inside them.
Everyone looked at him sympathetically. But at the same time, every heart tightened with dread. Had their own mates also remarried?
Flynn had only gotten engaged before heading to war. Once news of his “death” returned home, his fiancée had probably moved on as well.
He didn’t blame her. If anything, he hoped she found happiness.

He just felt terrible for Terrence. Over the years, Terrence had always talked about his mate- about their life together, their memories. Every time he spoke of her, there’d be light in his
eyes.
Willy had said similar things. He used to say his mate was timid and couldn’t handle hardship. If she learned he was dead, she’d probably cry for a very long time.
The past few years had been genuinely dangerous. They could be captured at any moment. And once they fell into Ovila’s hands, death was all that awaited them.
On top of that, Ovilan possessed a secret technique capable of directly harming the soul through the mate bond itself.
That was why they had taken a potion that forcibly severed the mate bond from their side alone.
Truthfully, from the very beginning, none of them had expected to make it home alive.
They chose loyalty and abandoned love. They were the ones who failed their mates.
So, they didn’t blame their mates.
At last, Terrence lifted his head.
He forced a bitter smile. The tears in his eyes stubbornly refused to fall.
“Maybe this is for the best,” he said, his voice dry and rough. “She loves being around people. Making her spend the rest of her life alone would’ve been cruel. I was the one who wronged her first. If she found happiness somewhere else, then I wish her well.”
Greer didn’t continue listening. She walked outside and sat beside Samuel. Her usually stern face looked even colder than before.
“Two of them are too badly injured. We’ll need to delay departure for a few days.”
“We can’t delay too long. We don’t have enough food.” Samuel let out a heavy sigh, staring up. The moon weaved in and out of the clouds, fading in and out of sight. “Three days at most. We have to leave. If they can’t walk, I’ll carry them myself.”
Only after returning to Simonne Town would they truly be safe.
“Then we’ll do it your way. I’ll help however I can. I also want to get back soon. You used that power again this time… The death deadline tied to your curse is definitely going to move up again. I need to figure something out.”
Samuel said nothing.

Greer looked at him, unable to hide the worry in her eyes. “Last time, it advanced by two years. This time… How much sooner will it be now? I don’t want to wake up one day and hear that favorite student is dead.”
