hapter 27 Maris’s Crime
Laila’s POV:
In truth, I didn’t care about Holt and Maris’s mating ceremony. They were no longer part life.

But the werewolves of the Silvermoon Pack were all thrilled. I knew they were happy on my behalf.
“Ms. Conlay, a letter from Mr. Green has arrived.”
Late that night, just as I was about to go to sleep, Pearl rushed in holding a letter. It was from Shane Green, my senior at Moonlight Academy. He was two years ahead of me, a powerful Alpha werewolf who didn’t serve any pack.
I immediately sat up and took the letter. As I read it, my heart trembled violently.
Maris had slaughtered prisoners and massacred a village.
My suspicions were right. There really was something wrong with that battle where Maris earned her glory.
For years, the Rydar Kingdom and Solantia Kingdom had been at war. But even during the fiercest fighting, both sides had always upheld a basic code. No killing civilians. No killing prisoners.
But Maris had massacred an entire village on Solantian soil.
She had slaughtered civilians.
She was insane.
And my grandfather had been the commander of that war. My father had also driven back the Solantian forces multiple times on the battlefield. At the time, I had still been the Luna of General Enclaw’s pack … So that was why those assassins had gone mad and killed my entire family in retaliation.
But something still didn’t add up.
After Maris massacred that village, why didn’t the Solantian werewolves inunediately counterattack and slaughter our civilians in return? Why did they choose to surrender instead and sign a peace treaty with Maris, agreeing to borders and a ceasefire?
Maris had led the negotiations for that treaty. That was why she received the most credit, with Holt coming in second.

But why had Maris been the one in charge? Where was my grandfather during all this?
I couldn’t figure it out. But one thing I now knew for certain. The reason my entire family had been massacred was because of Maris’s war crimes. Damn her!
And yet, after committing such atrocities, why hadn’t the Alpha King punished her? Why had he celebrated her instead?
The Alpha King had always insisted that in war between nations, civilians must never be harmed.
Could it be that the Alpha King didn’t know about any of this?
And what about my grandfather? What had he been doing? There was no way he would have sanctioned something like this.
When I returned to the Silvermoon Pack’s den, Pearl was still waiting for me.
She didn’t ask any questions when she saw me. She simply handed me a note. “Ms. Conlay, a letter from Ms. Orren.”
Tracy Orren was another senior from Moonlight Academy, one year ahead of me. She was exceptionally skilled at gathering intelligence.
I immediately unfolded the letter and read it. A chill ran down my spine. My suspicions had been confirmed again.
Tracy wrote that 300,000 Solantian troops had taken a route through the Ovila Kingdom, disguised as Ovilan werewolves, and were heading toward the Vagen Battlefield-with supplies.
Solantia Kingdom and Ovila Kingdom really had formed an alliance. Or rather, it wasn’t just an alliance. Solantia Kingdom was throwing everything they had into helping Ovila Kingdom. For revenge and to carve up Vagen.
But this had been done in secret. Samuel, who was stationed at the Vagen Battlefield, almost certainly didn’t know about this yet.
If no one warned him, he would be defeated. And he was the last great military leader the Rydar Kingdom had left.
A man like that couldn’t be allowed to die without even knowing what hit him.
Besides, when I was still the Luna of the Ironclaw Pack, he had always sent people to help manage the Silvermoon Pack.
“We have to save him!” Nita howled in my mind. “I have a feeling. He’s going to be our mate someday!”
