In an instant, a flood of thoughts ran through Laila’s mind. The black velvet box they had found in the Umbra Order, so similar to the one Estelle had given Diana.

Alpha Damian’s sudden desire to make Viola his new Luna… Was he after Viola’s wealth? Or something else?

Viola had also been to war. Had he set his sights on her strength too, or even on the Moonlight Academy standing behind her? The more Laila thought about it, the more frightened she became.

Elyse caught her breath and went on. “Laila, remember this. Don’t provoke him. Don’t make an enemy of him. He’s not as simple as people think.” Her voice had grown much weaker. Perhaps after discovering this secret in Bloodmoon Pack, she had become too afraid. She had spent every day in constant anxiety, and that was probably why her health had worsened a little more with each passing day.

“All these years, the things he did with those breeder females, all that doting and indulgence, it was only to numb His Majesty’s suspicions and hide his own ambitions.”

Laila felt her heart pounding wildly. Everyone thought Damian of Bloodmoon Pack was a lazy, useless coward. At least, she’d thought so before. Estelle hadn’t even chosen to live. there, so why would King Vaughn pay any attention to Greymoor County?

It seemed that once she returned to the Silvermoon Pack, she would have to investigate Estelle carefully. Samuel needed to hear

all of this too.

After Elyse said those things, she had no strength left and soon drifted into a heavy sleep.

Five days later, Pearl had fully recovered. Perhaps inspired by her, Elyse’s spirits seemed noticeably better too. At noon, she even drank some meat broth. Laila thought she was improving and was overjoyed. Holding Elyse’s hand, she urged her to keep resting properly. Once the bitter winter passed and spring came, everything would be all right.

Warm laughter shone in Elyse’s eyes as she answered, “Alright.”

Laila was so happy she didn’t notice the look Wren and Marigold exchanged, nor the silent sigh that passed between them.

Then, at midnight, Laila and Viola were startled awake by Marigold pounding on the door, her choked voice carrying through it.

“Elyse is gone!”

“No!”

Laila shot upright, gasping for breath as if she’d just been pulled from underwater.

Elyse hadn’t suffered when she died. She had passed in her sleep. Marigold had been keeping watch through the night, and when she rose in the middle of it to ask whether Elyse wanted a drink of water, she found that Elyse had already stopped breathing. She hadn’t made it through the winter. She died just like that in the silent loneliness of Moonlit Valley.

Viola and the others had expected Laila to break down and cry, but she was calm. There wasn’t a single tear in her eyes. She only said, “She’s gone. Maybe this is a release.”

Hearing that, Viola looked out at the dead trees that stood everywhere in Moonlit Valley. The loneliness that seeped from them seemed touched with despair. To die miserably in a place like this, with neither mate nor children by her side… If Laila hadn’t come, then when Elyse left this world, she truly wouldn’t have had a single family member beside her.

Laila decided to go to Bloodmoon Pack herself. She wanted to ask Damian whether his conscience felt any pain at all.

But when she arrived at Bloodmoon Pack with Pearl and the others, she learned that Damian had already gone to the Royal Court with Delilah, Elyse’s three children had gone too. The whole family had gone off to the Royal Court in laughter and reunion, leaving Elyse alone in the bleak cold of Moonlit Valley to die in solitude.

Laila immediately turned around and headed back.
