“Dissolve the mate bond?” Laila was stunned. “Why?”

Wren sighed. “When a man changes his heart, does he really need any other reason?”

Laila was trembling with rage, and Viola cursed outright. “See? I told you. There are no good men in this world.”

Hearing her voice, Wren looked over, hesitated, then said, “Ms. Conlay, this actually has something to do with you too.”

Viola was close to Laila, and Rowan’s apprentices all knew her as well. At that, Viola’s eyes went wide. “It has something to do with me? How is that possible? I don’t even know that Delilah person!”

Wren looked at her in surprise. “Didn’t you know? Damian went to the Stones and said he wanted to ask for you to be his new Luna‘

“That’s bullshit!” Viola exploded. “When did that happen? How do I not know about it? Damn it! Damian has no shame at all! How old is he? And he still thinks he can make me his Luna? That disgusting old bastard, I’ll chop him to pieces.”

Perhaps because Damian’s name kept being repeated over and over, tears slid down Elyse’s face. At last, the emptiness in her eyes focused, and she stared fixedly at Laila. She recognized her.

With a broken whimper, she burst into tears, crying so hard it was almost as if her heart were being torn out. She cried until it seemed she couldn’t catch her breath, then bent over the edge of the bed coughing and retching. What came up was mouthful after mouthful of bright red blood.

Laila was terrified. She gently patted Elyse’s back and wiped the blood away, but it just kept coming, one mouthful after another, until Elyse finally passed out.

Wren and Marigold seemed long used to this. They helped her lie back down, uncapped a vial of medicine, and fed it to her. Then they began cleaning her up, wiping her face and washing her.

At the sight of it, Laila’s hands were shaking. She’d known Elyse wasn’t in good health, but she’d never imagined she was this sick.

After they finished tending to her, Wren fed Elyse another vial of medicine, and only then did she slowly regain consciousness. She looked even weaker than before, but at least now she recognized Laila.

The moment she grabbed Laila’s hand, she looked ready to cry again, so Laila hurried to tell her, “Elyse, I’m doing well now. Prince Vance and I have become mates. He’s very good to me.”

“Really?” Elyse clearly hadn’t known. Her eyes widened, full of disbelief. “Aren’t you lying to me?”

“No, it’s true. Ask them.” Laila pulled Wren and Viola closer. “Ask them.”

Looking at Elyse, Viola nodded. “It’s true.”

Viola’s feelings were a mess. That filthy old thing Damian had ruined Elyse this badly, and he still had the nerve to want a new Luna, and of all people, her. Ugh! The more she thought about it, the more revolting it became.

But if she’d been there, she would’ve pointed right at his nose and ripped into him. To Viola, the sheer disgust of this whole business had reached the most revolting level she’d ever witnessed in her life, without comparison. Damian had to be at least forty, didn’t he? How had that rotten old man even come up with the idea of marrying her?

Laila had no attention to spare for Viola. She just soothed Elyse, and once Elyse had calmed down a little, she told her about everything that had happened in her life lately.

Clutching her hand, Elyse wept as she said, “I knew about you and Holt dissolving your mate bond. I knew you went to the battlefield too. I worry about you every day but thank goodness, everything’s all right now. You’ve found someone who truly loves you. Only now do I finally feel a little relieved.”

She let out a long sigh, her withered greenish face mixed with gray–white exhaustion. “This is all my fault. I should never have recommended Holt to you. I never imagined he’d dare betray the Moon Goddess’s will…”

As she spoke, she started crying again. Afraid her emotions would spiral once more, Wren quickly gave her a sleeping draught and let het rest.

After she fell asleep, Laila asked, “Is there really no other way to treat Elyse’s illness? Could Rowan come here?”

Wren said, “Ms. Sagewood came a long time ago. She just didn’t tell you. She said Elyse is simply enduring day by day now, and no one knows how much longer she can hold on. If the medicine stops, she probably only has a day or two left.”

Laila jerked her head up. “The medicine can’t stop.”

Wren answered helplessly, “Even if it doesn’t stop, she still doesn’t have many days left.”

Tears slid down Laila’s face. She truly hadn’t known Elyse was this ill. Originally, she’d only wanted to visit Elyse and then return to Silvermoon Pack once Pearl recovered. She still needed to handle the aftermath of the canceled mating ceremony herself. But now, looking at Elyse like this, she felt there was no way she could leave.

Viola sensed what she was feeling and pulled her into a hug.

That night, Laila and Viola lay in bed unable to sleep, each lost in her own thoughts. Then all at once, Viola sat up, her eyes shining in the dark.

“Laila, I want to sneak into Bloodmoon Pack and kill Damian.”
