Chapter 700

THIER

Rex felt genuine surprise wash over him all of a sudden.

Given his personality and family–run business background, Jimmy never cared much for these fancy corporate parties.

He would tag along only occasionally just so he wouldn’t kill their mood and ruin their fun.

Out of consideration for his buddies, he normally headed out early alongside Yves whenever they planned to leave the party ahead of schedule.

Jimmy would never stick around longer than necessary under regular circumstances.

It was so out of character for him to delay his departure tonight.

Rex quickly worked out the only reasonable explanation: the woman Jimmy loved was here.

A faint, amused smile tugged at Rex’s mouth. He turned his head toward Jimmy, ready to tease his friend about his

secret crush.

Then he noticed Jimmy’s gaze was fixed firmly on Johnny and Maggie’s corner of the gathering space.

Rex froze right away.

A sharp thought raced through his mind, and his soft smile faded completely. His fingers tightened unconsciously around the stem of his wine glass as unease crept over him.

He was still telling himself that this could not possibly be true when a loud crash of shattered glass cut through the low–volume chatter around the venue.

Maggie let out a small gasp and stumbled, nearly collapsing onto the floor.

Maggie’s carefully styled hair got messy, sections of her formal evening dress soaked with fruity cocktail and wine.

All the wine glasses on the waiter’s serving tray crashed to the ground, and the server stumbled straight toward Maggie. Juice and red wine splashed all over her gown.

When she stepped backward to get out of the way, she stepped on broken glass and twisted her ankle.

Johnny reacted in the nick of time and pulled her into his hold, which kept her from falling flat onto the glass–covered floor.

She would have suffered terrible injuries if she had crashed down onto those sharp pieces.

Glen had stepped away to chat with one of his friends for a short while.

As soon as he heard about what had taken place, he pushed through the surrounding crowd and hurried over.

Concern filled his whole face. “What happened? Did you get hurt?”
