Chapter 104 1
Chapter 104-1
(Sabrina’s POV)
The simple wisdom in his words breaks something open in my chest. Because he’s right. God, he’s
so right.
Dustin’s coming back because he realized what he lost. It took losing us for him to appreciate
what he had.
But Ethan never had to lose me to value me. He saw my worth from the beginning.
“You’re a very smart boy,” I whisper, pulling Jake close again. “When did you get so wise?”
“I’m five and three-quarters. That’s basically ancient.” His voice holds a hint of his usual humor. “Besides, Aunt Sophia says I’m an old soul. Whatever that means.”
I laugh despite the tears streaming down my face. “It means you’re an amazing kid. So, so special.
“I know.” He pauses. “Mom? Are you gonna call Mr. Jason now?”
“Yes. Yes, I think I am.”
“Good. Because he looked really sad when he left. And I don’t like when Mr. Jason is sad. He’s supposed to smile and be happy and take us to get ice cream.”
I pull back to wipe my eyes. “You’re right. Mr. Jason should be happy. And I’m going to make sure he knows-“I pause. “He makes me happy. But first, we need to talk to your dad. I need to tell him-
“That you’re not getting back together with him.” Jake squeezes my hand. “I’ll tell him with you. So he knows it’s not just you. It’s me too. I don’t want him to take the place of your shiny shoe protector. Just as my dad who visits sometimes.”
My heart swells with pride and love and gratitude for this incredible child. “Are you sure, baby? You won’t regret this?”
“I’m sure.” He sounds so certain. “Bad dad made you cry a lot. Mr. Jason makes you laugh. I pick laughing.”
“I pick laughing too.”
We walk back to Dustin’s room together, hand in hand. And for the first time since the park, I feel clear. Certain.
I know what I need to do.
And I know who I’m choosing
Not because of some grand romantic gear
But because Ethan chose me first. Chose vetvet bewo
ourselves.
And that-that unwavering, consistent, everyday choice o
rescues
Dustin can be Jake’s father. We’ll figure out visitation and so pareng and all the
But he’s not going to be my husband again. Not my partner Not my fue
That role is already taken.
When we push open Dustin’s door, we find him sitting up, staring at the disse
for us.
“Sabrina…” He begins, but I interrupt him.
“I’m sorry, I’m grateful to you for saving me. But the past is the past I don’t have you stayTTIDE NIE can’t go back”
Jake goes to his bedside and pats his shoulder as if to offer comfort, saying, “Bad dad you can visit me sometimes. Like the judge said. But Mr. Jason is my new Sad TION. THE SITE WITHI’S INSTATED live with me and mom and marry her so they can give me a little sister or brother
Dustin’s eyes widen in disbelief. “A little brother?”
“Or sister. But I’d rather have a brother.” He shrugs. “Either way, Mr. Jason is part of our family room So Bad Dad…better luck next time,”
Dustin leans back, looking resigned. It hits me then that he must’ve expected this outcoTTE must’ve known he’s already lost his chance but just refused to accept it. Or perhaps, after this heroic sacrifice, he might’ve gotten the impression he has a better chance to turn things around But after hearing Jake’s words, all his delusions shattered, forcing him to face the facts
“I know you’re sad. Now that Mean Lady Jessica is taken by the cops, you don’t have anyone to love you. It’s okay, I’ll stay with you until you get better. But bad dad, if Mr. Jason was closer to mom, he would’ve also saved mom. So saving mom can’t be a reason for her to return to you That’s emotional blackmail. You understand, right?”
