Having just been kissed in front of everyone and granted his coveted title, Nicholas felt as if he were walking on clouds.
Even faced with the murderous glares of the three Lancaster brothers, he smiled with innocent compliance. "Don't worry."
"I'm not here to break up this family. I'm here to join it."
The three brothers stood frozen.
"Who the hell wants you in our family?!" they roared in unison, their fists clenching tightly. "Get the hell out!"
Nicholas took it in stride. "Since I have the title now, it's only natural we'll be family soon enough."
Jasper lunged forward. "I'm going to kill you!"
Nicholas immediately shifted a half-step closer to Serena, brushing his shoulder gently against hers. "Serena, Jasper is being so mean to me."
Jasper's jaw dropped.
The Manipulative Romantic!
This bastard was actually playing the victim!
"Ah! Don't hold me back! I'm going to end him! I'll end him right now!"
The entire crowd fell into a stunned silence.
Nathan Hart couldn't hold it in anymore and nearly burst into laughter.
He clamped a hand over his mouth, his shoulders shaking uncontrollably.
Good lord.
Nicholas was laying the innocent act on so thick you could cut it with a knife.
Serena cast a sideways glance at Nicholas and reached up to pinch his cheek. "Having fun pretending?"
Nicholas chuckled low in his throat, lightly nuzzling her shoulder. "I only pretend for you."
Yet, the radiant amusement in his striking eyes didn't diminish in the slightest.
The brotherly trio silently fumed.
Their teeth ground together.
Their fists were practically shaking with the need to punch him. If it weren't for the fact that tonight was The Vinton Debutante Gala, with hundreds of elite guests watching, they would have tackled Nicholas to the ground right then and there.
On the other side of the room.
Old Mr. Blackwood was ecstatic.
He slammed his hand onto a table, his face flushed with a healthy, vibrant glow, looking as though he had shaved ten years off his age. "Excellent! Absolutely excellent! This is wonderful!"
Old Mr. Blackwood wasn't the least bit offended; his smile only grew more smug. "Provisional is still a title!"
Holding his glass, he chuckled cheerfully. "As long as there's a title, becoming family is only a matter of time."
Old Mr. Lancaster practically convulsed with rage. "You Blackwoods have absolutely no shame."
Old Mr. Blackwood replied with absolute conviction, "What good is shame when a granddaughter-in-law is on the line?"
Old Mr. Blackwood beamed. "And soon to be my granddaughter-in-law."
Old Mr. Lancaster shot back, "That's not set in stone! My girl said it herself—it's only 'provisional'."
Old Mr. Blackwood nodded firmly. "A provisional granddaughter-in-law is still a granddaughter-in-law."
Old Mr. Lancaster yelled, "Get out!"
Old Mr. Blackwood chuckled. "I'm not leaving. I'm staying to drink the tea my new granddaughter-in-law serves me."
Old Mr. Lancaster looked ready to swing his cane.
This old bastard!
Absolutely shameless!
