The isolation ward was packed. Everyone was moving at breakneck speed.
The ID badge on the cleaner's chest was perfectly valid. He slowly pushed his cart closer to Dr. Grant's room.
Elyndorian guards were stationed outside the door. He didn't try to force his way in.
Instead, as he passed a ventilation maintenance shaft, he gave a subtle flick of his wrist. A microscopic, transparent capsule shot from his fingertips and slipped through the metal grates of the vent.
The capsule burst silently.
An odorless, colorless trace amount of Obsidian Neurotoxin began to filter through the ventilation system, drifting directly into Dr. Grant's room.
It happened in a fraction of a second, hidden from everyone.
The cleaner lowered his eyes and casually pushed his cart away, preparing to slip out unnoticed.
The Obsidian Sun had operated in Severia for years. Even with their headquarters decimated, sleeper agents were still embedded in the peripheral medical teams.
Seeing Dr. Grant awake changed everything. He was a former subordinate of Aria Wynn and held far too many of the Obsidian Sun's secrets. He had to die.
But at that exact moment, Serena, who was finishing up on the last expert, suddenly stopped.
She looked up, her gaze snapping toward Dr. Grant's room. Her eyes turned lethal. "Seal the vents!"
Dr. Dawson blinked in confusion. "What?"
Serena was already sprinting toward the room.
Simultaneously, Dr. Grant's monitor let out a piercing, continuous scream.
*BEEP—BEEP—BEEP—*
Inside the room, Dr. Grant's face had turned a sickly, bruised purple. He gasped desperately for air, his pupils rapidly dilating.
"Dr. Grant!" the guard shouted in panic.
The cleaner pushing the bio-hazard cart instantly picked up his pace.
But he only managed to take one step.
Moments later, the terrifying purple hue began to fade from his face.
Dr. Grant coughed violently, his cloudy eyes wide with pure terror.
Serena looked down at him, her beautiful features frozen in an arctic glare. "It seems the Obsidian Sun is terrified of you waking up."
Dr. Grant let out a bitter, raspy laugh. "Of course they are. I know entirely too much."
Serena pulled up a chair and sat beside his bed. She studied him in silence for a long moment before speaking. "You said you worked with my grandmother."
Dr. Grant's eyes widened in shock. "You... you really are Chief Engineer Wynn's granddaughter?"
Serena gave a slight nod.
Tears welled in Dr. Grant's eyes once again, his lips trembling. "No wonder... no wonder..."
"You are so much like her... it's uncanny. Especially your eyes. You have her exact look."
It wasn't just a physical resemblance. It was her aura. Her terrifying brilliance. The fierce, unyielding fire in her soul.
