“Recently, the Hales have run into serious trouble, and I know you’ve been running around trying to deal with it, so this money can be considered a contribution from the Ruells. Ms. Sinclair, please accept it.”

Agnes let out a soft laugh. She knew Emily was trying to use money to push her away from Neal.

She calmly slid the card back toward Emily and said, “There’s no need for the money. I can talk to Neal and make things clear. I genuinely want what’s best for him.”

Emily looked a little surprised, thinking Agnes found the amount insufficient, and said, “This is already the greatest sincerity the Ruells can offer.

“If you’re not satisfied… then name your price.”

Agnes shook her head. “Mrs. Ruell, money is a useful thing, but it can’t buy people’s hearts.

“My friendship with Neal has never been measured in money.

Emily was about to speak when Agnes cut her off, “What you said today makes it sound like Neal is living in the Ruells like a caged bird, without any freedom at all.

“That’s just how elite families are, Ms. Sinclair. You’ve been part of one before. You should understand what matters most to us.

“In many situations, family interests come first, and everything else isn’t up to us.”

Agnes fell silent. She knew no matter how much she said, someone like Emily, shaped by a lifetime in such a family, would never change.

She felt a quiet sadness for Neal. Is he really happy living like this?

Agnes stood up and said to Emily, “Mrs. Ruell, I’ll talk to him and make things clear. Please take the card back. I’ll be going now.”

As she turned to leave, a tall man stood at the doorway, staring at them.

It was Neal, his expression tense and anxious.

He had heard from his people that Emily had come to see Agnes and rushed over to the club.

“Agnes, I’m sorry. I didn’t know my mom would come find you. Did she make things difficult for you?”

Hearing Neal’s words, Emily grew flustered and quickly stood up to explain, “Neal, I just came to confirm a few things with Ms. Sinclair.

“Ms. Sinclair herself just said she doesn’t have that kind of feeling for you, that she only sees you as a normal friend.”

Then she looked at Agnes, as if asking for help.

“Ms. Sinclair, everything I said is true, right? I didn’t make things hard for you, did I?”

Neal’s face darkened as he turned to Emily.

Her expression was calm, but her words struck Neal like a blow to the chest.

He didn’t want to let go, didn’t want to release her, but her words forced his hand.

Agnes gently pried his fingers away and said softly, “Go back, Neal. I know you want to help me, and I appreciate it. Thank you.”

Neal stood there stiffly, watching her walk away, his eyes filled with loneliness.

Behind him, Emily tried to persuade him, “Neal, you saw it yourself. Whether I came today or not, Ms. Sinclair doesn’t have feelings for you. You’re the only one holding onto this.

Neal said nothing and walked out of the club, leaving his mother behind.

“Agnes, what took you so long? Mom and I have been waiting forever!”
