OCEANS.

My ears rang.

“Vanessa, listen to me.” The words were falling over each other now, and I let them. “Whatever you want, it’s yours. Money, a confession, my company, my life – I mean it, take my life, I’ll come to you right now, alone, anywhere you say, and you can do whatever you want with me, and I swear to God I won’t resist you. Just let her walk away. Her and the baby. Please. She’s got nothing to do with what I did to you-”

“She’s carrying your child.” Her voice stayed terribly even. “I was there when the doctor told her. I held her hand while she found out. Ironic, isn’t it?” She laughed.

The car suddenly became too hot. I was losing air, just as much as I was losing my mind.

I shut my eyes. Something in my chest was coming apart in slow motion, and I had to keep talking through it.

“Then you know. You know she’s innocent. You of all people – Vanessa, you know what it is to lose everything for something someone else did. Don’t do it to her. Do it to me. I’m the one. It was always me—”

“Oh, shut it, Oceans.” Her control cracked. “I don’t want anything with you. It will give me utmost pleasure to take away the two important people in your life right now. And that’s what I am going to do.”

My grip on the phone tightened.

“I waited for you. But you never showed up.” Her voice was so raw I flinched from the speaker. “I lay in that hospital bed for four months, and nobody came, Oceans. Nobody came. I used to hear the door and think- every time the door opened, I thought-” She stopped, and I heard her catch her breath. When she spoke again, the evenness in her voice was back. “You didn’t come. You bought a grave instead. You always did prefer things finished.”

“I didn’t know. God, Vanessa, if I had known-“I was at a loss for words.

Silence followed for a moment. Then, I heard footsteps in the background. Then I heard her say something, but it wasn’t to me – her voice had turned away from the phone, muffled up before I heard: “Here. Speak.”

I was dying with anticipation.

“Oceans?”

Her voice.

Finally, her voice. God. It was her.

I came up off the wheel so fast my elbow caught the horn, but I didn’t care. I fucking didn’t care about anything at that point; even though she sounded small and wet and shaking, she was alive.

“Kiss. I’m here, baby. I’m here. Are you hurt? Did she hurt you—”

“I’m scared.” It came out of her in pieces, everything at once, tumbling over each other. “I’m so scared, I didn’t – Oceans, I didn’t know it was you, all this time I didn’t know, the watch, I had the watch and I never and she told me everything and I- you looked for me? You really looked for-” Her breath hitched hard. “I’m sorry. I don’t even know what… I just- Oh God-”

She was spiraling, and it killed me.

She was terrified. And that can’t be good for her and the baby, right?

“Listen to me.” I was gripping the phone so hard it almost cracked under my hold. I made my voice do the one job I desperately wanted it to do at the moment – hold still, for her. “Nothing else matters right now. You’ll say all you want to say to me later. All of it, do you hear me? Face to face. What matters is you and the baby, and I am coming for you. I swear it on my life, Kisarel. I will not let anything happen to you. I’m coming-”

“Oceans, I-”

I heard the phone being taken from her.

“No, no,” Vanessa said, amused. “That’s enough of that.”

“Vanessa, put her back on. Put her back-”

“You shouldn’t make promises you can’t keep.” She said. “You have a bad history with them. She doesn’t know that about you yet, but I do.”

“Vanessa-”

“In less than two hours, she’ll be dead.”

Elgin’s hand came off his mouth, shaking his head as fresh tears traced down his cheeks. My whole body had gone cold, colder than it had ever been in my life.

“That’s all you get,” she said, and she sounded like she was stating a fucking fact. “You’re going to watch. That’s what’s left. You’re going to watch history repeat itself. Only this time, you’ll be on the ugly side of the table. And then you’re going to live afterward. Living is the punishment. I promise you, it’s the punishment. Nobody ever believes me.”

“VANESSA-”

The line clicked, and she was gone.

“Oceans,” Elgin called from beside me. The man had turned all shades of pale red already. “She meant every word she just said. That woman is not joking. We need to do something!”

My vision blurred.

“Reeves.” I had to try twice because my voice wouldn’t obey. “Reeves. Please. Tell me you got something.”

There was a pause on the line.

“One tower, sir. West of the city, rural sector.” His voice was as gentle as I’d ever heard it, which frightened the shit out of me. Reeves only sounded this way when there was a problem.

“It’s wide.” He went on. “It’s not a specific address. But it’s west.”

West.
