Chapter 73
I got in and shut the door. The interior smelled like him–cedon care cream and leather. I handed him the note Connor had pressed into my hand.
Silas unfolded it under the dim light from the dashboard. His eyes scanned the cramped handwriting–shift change windows, guard positions a rough sketch of the warehouse’s side entrance.
His jaw tightened.
He looked at me. I could tell he’d read my face before he read the paper. He knew Connor had asked for something. He could see the answer I’d given in the set of my shoulders.
He put the note down and covered my hand with his. His fingers worked slowly through mine, easing the tension I hadn’t realized I was holding.
“Connor’s obsession isn’t going to fade.” His voice was quiet. “Every time you go to him, you need to keep your guard up. No exceptions.”
“I know.”
“He’ll keep offering. And every time you refuse, he’ll find another angle.”
“I know, Silas.”
He nodded once. Dropped it. But his tail, which had been still during the conversation, gave one slow sweep against the seat.
Back home, I sat at the kitchen table and organized everything. The warehouse photos. Connor’s verbal account. The shift rotation note. I typed it all into a structured file, timestamped each entry, and saved it.

Silas was in the living room. I could hear the TV on, low volume. He wasn’t watching it. Neither of us was ready to talk about what came next.
I set the glass down and walked back to the couch. He shifted to make room for me without looking up. I sat down. His tail draped across my lap, warm and heavy.
We stayed like that for a while.
Then my phone buzzed on the coffee table.
I picked it up. A notification from social media. A friend tag.
Lopened it.
My stomach dropped
There were photos. Four of them. Taken from a distance, but clear enough. Last night. The roadside. Kane and me, standing by his car, talking. My face visible. His face is visible. The angle made it look like we were close. Intimate.
The caption underneath was short. Just a name and a question mark.
The post had been up for twenty minutes. It already had over a thousand shares.
I woke up to a phone that wouldn’t stop buzzing.
The screen was already lit when I reached for it, notifications stacked so
