I Rejected My Obsessive Werebeast novel Chapter 2

Chapter 2
Aurora’s POV
“Aurora, who was on the phone just now?” he pressed.
Canine werebeasts were famously possessive of their owners. If Connor learned I planned to cut our bond entirely, he would do everything he could to sabotage my plan.
So I brushed it off easily. “Nothing. It’s just a spam call.”
Connor still looked skeptical. He walked over and circled around me, his nose twitching as he scented my clothes up and down. After finding no trace of another werebeast’s musk on my skin, a quiet pleased rumble escaped his throat.
But his good mood faded the second his eyes landed on the things I was going to toss.
His brows furrowed together. “What are you doing with all this stuff?”
I quickly thought of an excuse. “Things are a bit of a mess, so I’m planning to reorganize everything.”
He bought my lie without another thought. Then he hauled me upright off the mattress in one quick tug. “We’re throwing a birthday party for Phoebe downstairs. Come and join us.”
I had zero desire to step foot in that noisy living room especially with Phoebe in it. Yet I also didn’t want Connor to stay here and poked his nose into everything. He would be very difficult if he found out that I was planning on changing my werebeast.
So I let him tug me away.
Deafening pop music boomed through the house the moment we reached the ground floor.
I immediately stopped Phoebe surrounded by a crowd of friends and their werebeasts.
“Happy birthday! Our dear Phoebe!” they all cheered for her.
She stood in the middle of the crowd, smiling and blushing, apparently enjoying the attention from everybody.
Connor abandoned me without a second of hesitation and strode over. He grinned and put a glittering party crown onto her head.
“Happy birthday, Phoebe,” he said softly. “May all of your wishes come true.”
“Thank you, Connor,” Phoebe accepted with a bright smile. Her gaze found me and she put on an innocent smile immediately. “Oh, Aurora you are here! Hurry, let me see your birthday gift for me. My dear sister must have gotten me something I love, right?”
Everyone looked at my empty hand, and their expressions turned subtle.
It’s another one of Phoebe’s classic trick—setting me up and making me look like the guilty one.
This time, I ignored her question and shot back dryly, “I thought you were stuck home suffering from a depressive episode earlier. But look at you now, all happy and smiling.”
Her smile cracked for a brief second, and then she pouted instantly. “I really was feeling awful, but being around all my closest friends lifted my mood right up. So I’m fine now.”
A girl standing nearby immediately wrapped her arms around Phoebe. “And we’re all so happy to be here with you, Phoebe. We want you to be happy. Unlike someone here.” She shot me a look of despise.
“That’s right. What’s your problem, Aurora?” said another boy sharply. “Don’t you want Phoebe to be happy? She’s your twin for Christ’s sake. Or are you just jealous that everybody loves her more than you?”
That got a round of laugh from the crowd. And then almost everyone jumped in, sneering and jeering, and started calling me bitter and jealous.
I stared at their familiar faces with cold detachment.
These people had once been my closest friends.
Since my parents brought Phoebe back from the Lower District when we turned 15, I felt sorry for all the hardships she had gone through. So I wanted to share with her everything I had. Including my friends.
At first, everything was fine. My friends even warned me to stay wary. They said that Phoebe was raised in the slums and she was scheming and manipulative.
Then what happened?
Barely half a year later, the tables had turned completely.
Phoebe managed to win everyone over. And suddenly, I was the cruel, scheming girl they whispered about behind my back.
How ironic.
I flicked a glance toward Connor. A small part of me still hoped he’d step in and defend me.
Instead, he just frowned and sighed. “Don’t be so petty, Aurora. They’re only joking around.”
Joking?
I couldn’t help but think back to the way Connor used to be.
I’d rescued Connor from the Lower District years ago. I found him locked inside a cramped metal cage covered head to toe in wounds.
I didn’t knew about his past suffering but I still brought him home and hired specialized werebeast healers to heal his injuries. I was willing to pay any price for those top-tier nutrient supplements for his recovery.
What did he say back then? He buried his face into my hands, choking that nobody had ever cared for him like I had. He swore he’d repay me and he’d cherish me for the rest of his life.
At first, he’d snap at anyone who dared utter a single negative word about me.
But now look at him. He’d call me petty in front of all these people, right after I got attacked.
A mocking smile touched my lips.
If I hadn’t accidentally found his diary and discover his obsessive thoughts, I might’ve still believed he was just defending Phoebe because he liked her. I might even be jealous.
But not anymore. I was done playing his manipulative little games.
Throughout it all, unlike their owners, all the present werebeasts stayed dead silent. They only cast sharp, disdainful glances toward Connor. Clearly they all think it’s shameful to suck up to humans who aren’t your own master.
“Everyone, stop to blame my sister,” Phoebe put a hand on her mouth and shook her head. “Aurora, it’s fine if you didn’t bring a gift. After all, today’s also your birthday.”
An awkward hush fell over the crowd.
Then one of my former best friends stepped forward. “I’m sorry, Aurora. I forgot that you two share the same date… Anyway, happy birthday.”
A person who knew we were twin sisters had somehow forgotten that we were born on the same day? The excuse was painfully unconvincing.
But I didn’t call her out on it. I simply forced a bitter smile and said, “Thank you.”
Phoebe spoke up again out of the blue. “Actually, Aurora, I know what you can give me as my birthday gift. Can I ask for a favor?”
“What?” I stared at her.
She smiled sweetly. “The Matching Center called me earlier to ask if I needed assistance finding a werebeast. I turned their offer down and told them that…Connor is my werebeast.”
Gasps could be heard from nearby. Connor rounded his eyes abruptly. Even he looked shocked.
Phoebe’s sweet smile grew wider. “I hope you don’t mind. You know, I still want to live with Mom and Dad for couple more years, so I used Connor as a cover to turn the center away. That’s fine with you, right?”
I knew exactly what kind of reaction she was hoping for.
She hoped I’d throw a tantrum, yell at her, curse her. Then she’d had another chance to paint me as the crazy one and herself as the innocent one.
I wouldn’t let her have her ways this time.
“Oh you can have Connor,” I smiled back. “I don’t mind at all.”
Phoebe froze. Connor spun around, his eyes blown wide in complete shock.
