Chapter 14
Aurora’s POV
“It’s none of your business,” I said coldly.
Connor was furious. He took a step forward and seized my hand, his eyes bloodshot.
“So this is it?” he snapped. “This is what you’ve been doing all night while I sit here like an idiot trying to fix things between us?”
“I didn’t ask you to sit here.”
He cursed loudly. “Fuck, Aurora. So you think it’s OK to whore yourself out to him?”
My faced dropped.
“You’re a werebeast. Is that really the right way to talk to me?” I said, half- warning.
In our world, werebeasts have lower social status than humans. Unless a high–ranked werebeast like Silas, then they are barely equal with us.
Besides, I was a high–ranked human. Connor had no right to talk to me like that, no matter what.
But anger must have clouded his mind. Connor seized my wrist and glared at me in rage. “What, now that you’ve moved on, you’re going to pull that I’m–a–human–and–you’re–an–animal shit on me?”
I struggled but couldn’t break free. Just when I was about to yell at him

again, a deep growl sounded behind my back.
Silas rushed over like a storm and shoved Connor away.
“Stay the hell away from Aurora,” he snarled.
Connor staggered and then snapped his head to Silas, and I saw

something dangerous flicker in his eyes. “This is between the two of us, Fuck off, cat.”
“There’s no US anymore. Aurora ended things with you. Now leave, dog,” Silas narrowed his eyes dangerously.
Connor let out a cold laugh. “I’ve known her for years and now you show up, I’m suddenly nothing? What the fuck did you do to her to make her spread her legs-”
He never got to finish the sentence.
Silas moved faster than I could possibly imagined, grabbing Connor by his collar and slamming him back against the wall. The force was strong to make the break creak.
“I warned you to watch your mouth,” Silas gritted. “Say one more disrespectful thing about her, and I’ll put you through this wall.”
Connor tensed up, his chest rising and falling rapidly. After a long pause, he gritted, “Aurora, get this cat off me. I need to talk to you.”
“Silas, let him talk,” I said.
Silas’s grip on Connor’s shirt loosened and he took a step back, but his eyes stayed fixed on Connor, wary and watchful.
Connor turned to me again. He was still wearing that arrogant mask, but I could tell from his expression that it was about to crack.

“…there’s something you don’t know about me, Aurora,” he said with difficulty, clenching his fists. “The truth is…I was never into Phoebe.”
I crossed my arms. “And?”
He frowned, probably a little surprised at how calm and cold I was, but he continued anyway.
“I never felt anything for her. It was all just… I was trying to make you jealous. I thought if you saw me with someone else, you’d finally realize what you were losing. I thought you’d fight for me.”
He swallowed, his voice cracking.
“So yeah…here’s the truth,” he said, taking in a deep breath, and stared at me hopefully. “Now you know how I feel and we can get back together. This feeling is mutual! I know you didn’t like my method, but we can totally fix this-”
“Connor, stop,” I said quietly. “I know about it.”
He blinked, confused. “You…know what?”
“I know you’ve always had feelings for me,” I said. “I read your journal. Found it in your room that last time you stood me up at the Mating Center. I knew you were using Phoebe to get to me but I still chose to leave you. you want to know why?”
The color drained from his face.
“It doesn’t change anything,” I said. “The way you tried to manipulate me… it killed whatever chance we might have had.”
He rounded his eyes and stood there frozen for a long moment,
I could see the hope shattering in his eyes. He probably thought that by

giving up his pride and confessing his feelings, I’d come running back to him.
But clearly, he was wrong.
“Wait no…so–this is real?” he said hoarsely, taking a step toward me. “But I can change. I swear to you, Aurora, I can be better! I’ll do whatever it takes-”
“Too late.”
I pulled out my phone with trembling fingers, scrolling to the number for the mating center’s emergency line.
“What are you doing?” Connor asked, panic creeping into his voice.
“Calling the mating center,” I said. “I’m no longer your owner. They’ll find a new place for you.”
