Sinclair POV
The blood pact. Right. Maybe it’s this pregnancy, but my nerves are making knots in my stomach. I’m used to working, used to being cast aside, used to being insulted, but I’m not used to being the center of attention. Now I’m going to have to stand on a stage in front of everyone to do this pact.
I take a deep breath. “Okay. Let’s go,” I said.
Thalia walks up to me. “It’s quick, I promise. It’s necessary though, Sinclair.”
I nodded and followed everyone to the training facility. It seems like this is always the spot for the ceremony. I’ve never understood why.
When we get there, Mom and Dad are waiting. Mom runs up to me and hugs me gently, then Dad does. She has tears in her eyes, etched with worry and relief.
“Don’t you ever run off like that again, Sinclair. We’re family. I will slap both of my sons if they hurt you.”
Dad looked at me. “I’m glad you are back, honey. Let’s get this done, and then we can talk more.”
I nodded. Adrian looked at his mom and kissed her cheek. “It was only a misunderstanding, Mom. A genuine misunderstanding.”
She hugged Adrian and nodded. Then she grabbed my free hand and walked in with me. It feels so surreal to have people care about me like this. I really was foolish. I need to work harder with speaking about what’s on my mind.
We enter the training facility, and the warriors are there. I pass them as they all look at me walking to the front podium. I feel less nervous because I have Adrian with me. He steadies me. I didn’t realize it before, but he does. It makes me realize that I am starting to lean on him, and it feels foreign to me.
When we get to the podium, Aiden begins his speech. He slices his hand and asks me if I swear to keep the oath of this pact and maintain its secrecy. Once I confirmed, I drank from the cup, and it didn’t take even a minute. I started feeling searing pain.
“Argh!” I screamed out.
“Sinclair!” Adrian yelled.
My back arched forward, and my eyes were looking straight above me. I blacked out. When I opened my eyes, I was in a meadow. I see colors around me that I cannot describe. There is a pond in the distance, shimmering so serenely it almost looks like diamonds are floating on the surface.
“Irene?” I heard a woman’s voice behind me.
I turned around. Three people were standing there. One of them looks like me. The other two were a man and a woman. I look a lot like the woman, but I have the man’s eyes. I suddenly realize these are my parents and my sister.
“Mom? Dad? Iris?” I asked quickly.
“My daughter!” The woman said as she approached me.
In such a beautiful place, I’m seeing my parents. Wait. “Am I dead?”
Iris laughed. “No. You are in between worlds. Moon Goddess said we could talk to you first.”
I hugged the three of them. I started crying. Mom was crying the hardest.
“Why am I here?” I asked.
The parallels between Amber and me are similar. No wonder Adrian was so nervous about me when he found me. I will talk to him when I am back.
“I didn’t either. I only ran, though,” I said quietly.
“You ran, but when faced with Ronan, you didn’t falter. You fought back. You are stronger. You are more loyal. You are important, Sinclair. I have to go, but tell Adrian that his delicate petal is fine and I have nothing to forgive. Tell him, his delicate petal said that everything is as it should be.”
Delicate petal? “I will. I promise.”
My parents and Iris approached me again. “It’s time for us to go back too, my child. You are so loved, Irene. You are loved in the living world, and in the Moon Goddess’s realm. You have love all around you now. You will never be alone.”
Tears start falling, and I hugged everyone and watched them walk away until I’m standing there by myself. After what seems like a couple of minutes, I hear rustling from a distance. When I walked towards the noise, I saw a beautiful woman and Mali!
“Mali!” I called out as I ran to her. I hugged her fiercely.
“I told you I’m not leaving you, Clair!” she said, and her tone was playful.
I smiled widely as I looked at the gorgeous woman standing next to Mali and me. Long white hair that looks like silk. Her frame is slender, and yet she stands tall and exudes love and authority at the same time.
“Are you the Moon Goddess?”
She smiled. “Yes. I am Selene.”
