He worried that saying too much would cause Julia to die too soon—taking the truth about Caleb's death with her to the grave.
After all, he'd been injured right around the time Caleb died. However you looked at it, the whole thing had been set up well in advance.
Julia was Caleb's wife, which meant she probably knew plenty. But his own methods were too rough; he was afraid she wouldn't survive long enough to tell him anything useful.
He also couldn't shake the concern that Caleb—sentimental fool that he was—might have quietly assigned some of his people to watch over her before he died. Caleb had never suspected Julia of working against him.
He'd never kept his guard up around her.
If everything blew up now, it would become a major headache.
To make matters worse, Julia had recently been in touch with the main branch of the White family.
Whatever had happened before, the side branches had always handled their own messes internally.
The main branch was supposed to stay clean—just respectable businesspeople minding their own affairs.
But now they were openly letting Julia get involved with the Harrisons.
Did that mean they'd already figured out his role wasn't just limited to the Harrison family?
Or was it because of that person everyone kept whispering about?
Otherwise, Julia would've been buried alongside Caleb long ago.
"Love-struck idiots really are nothing but trouble," Lucas muttered under his breath.
Caleb's death weighed on him, but there was nothing he could do. From the day they'd both chosen this path, their lives had been hanging by a thread.
They'd seen it coming from the start.
They'd even promised each other that if one died, they wouldn't leave the other with any loose ends.
Look how that turned out.
His brother really went and married quite the woman.
Before Caleb's one-week memorial had even passed, she was already scouting for her next man—and even had the nerve to say she wanted to marry his younger brother next.
Max stared in disbelief.
Lucas had finally lost it—calling himself "love-struck" now.
He hated himself so much he'd curse himself out loud.
Sherry felt a tension headache building behind her eyes.
Just then, her phone buzzed with a string of notifications.
They were from Julia. When had she even added this woman?
The messages were basically screenshots from social media. At first, public sentiment had been sympathetic toward Sherry.
But after she kept refusing to make public appearances, the Campbells started playing the victim card all over town.
And they hinted—almost reluctantly—that Sherry had some kind of history with that fiancé...
So the attacks on Sherry intensified. She had a husband but was still chasing after someone else's partner.
They insisted the only reason people accused their "goddess" Julia of cheating was because Sherry herself was out there seducing every man in sight. Her own conscience was dirty, so she assumed everyone else was just as rotten.
She was shameless and had no morals!
They said the Campbell family did the right thing.
She ought to be locked away in some dark room forever—never allowed out to hurt anyone again!! Nothing Sherry had suffered was enough.
"Sherry, how does it feel to be stuck in there cleaning out those porta-potties, living day in and day out surrounded by filth? I made sure that janitorial assignment ended up in your hands—perfect for a pathetic loser like you!"
"Sherry, by the time you crawl out of that hellhole reeking of garbage, your reputation and your body will be ruined for good!"
"Oh, and I had Cathy turn up the voltage in your unit. You must've felt it by now, right? I guarantee, after a month in there, you'll come out paralyzed. And since your name is already dirt, even if you try to tell the truth, nobody will believe you anyway."
"Just stay in whatever filthy neighborhood you end up in and rot."
Julia was laughing like she'd completely lost her mind.
She'd finally gotten rid of that wretched woman.
"Oh, right! One more thing. I heard there was some pendant your grandmother left you or something. Honestly, it looked so cheap I didn't even give it a second glance—so I didn't get a good look. But anyway..."
