"It's nothing."
Jupiter's voice was flat. He turned to look at Caleb. The wind had blown Caleb's hair completely back, exposing the large birthmark on his forehead.
It was a stark, jagged patch that overshadowed his eyes.
Looking at it, Jupiter recalled Caleb from his past life. In that timeline, Caleb had accidentally stabbed someone during a brawl and was sent to prison at a tragically young age.
On the day he was incarcerated, his parents hadn't shown up, too ashamed of him.
Jupiter had been the only one there.
Caleb had always kept his hair long, seemingly convinced that the birthmark was hideous and off-putting, using his bangs as a shield.
It had been an overcast day. Caleb had shaved his head into a buzzcut, exposing his entire face—and the mark—to the world.
Though barely an adult, Caleb had seemed to age overnight, his former restless immaturity completely stripped away.
He had looked at Jupiter and whispered softly, *"Jupiter, thank you."*
For the first time, Jupiter asked about the fight. "Why did you get into it this time?"
-
"Does there have to be a reason?"
Seth leaned against the taxi window. "I felt like fighting, so I fought."
Winona crossed her arms. "Do I look like I believe that?"
The taxi pulled to a stop. Dusk was falling, the artificial koi pond in the courtyard shimmering under the fading light.
Seth shrugged. "Me getting into fights is basically a daily occurrence anyway, isn't it?"
Winona let out a huff of laughter. "That's true enough."
She had only asked in passing. Seeing his defensive attitude, she already had a pretty good idea of what had happened.
It was almost certainly over Whitney Harper.
It had gotten to the point where Winona genuinely felt that Penelope was more of a mother to her than Stella was.
It wasn't until the Lennox family went bankrupt in her past life that Winona finally saw Penelope's true colors.
When she realized that her beloved Uncle Quincy and his family had betrayed them, her first instinct had been to run to Penelope for help.
At the time, Penelope had been sitting in her opulent estate, sipping afternoon tea and laughing with her socialite friends.
When she saw Winona standing behind the butler, Penelope had waved her hand as if shooing away a beggar, signaling the butler to throw her out.
During that dark period, Winona had tasted the absolute bitterest dregs of human cruelty.
"Is that so?" Winona gave a tight, totally fake smile. "Seth and I were out having fun. Next time you want to visit, you should let us know in advance."
Penelope froze, instinctively sensing that something was off.
She stared at Winona, scrutinizing her expression, but couldn't spot a single crack.
It was the exact same face, wearing the exact same spoiled, arrogant expression she always did.
