Julian's gaze was scorching, a hopelessly fond smile curving his lips.
Scarlett didn't dare look him in the eye. She squeezed her eyes shut, her fingernails digging unconsciously into her palms as she tried to endure the overwhelming proximity.
Thankfully, her phone started ringing. It was Stellan.
"Scarlett," Stellan’s confident voice came through the speaker. "I looked into Heath Sheridan like you asked, and I've already uncovered some critical clues. He’s telling everyone he was in Country A for a standard business trip. He completely omitted the fact that he was anywhere near the narco-town. And the reason Sylvia's camp is so convinced you and Julian are dead? Heath explicitly told Kane Stetson that he watched you both plunge off the cliff with his own eyes."
Scarlett immediately sobered up, glancing at Julian before putting the phone on speaker.
The romantic tension vanished, replaced by sharp focus. Julian pulled up a chair for her and crouched beside it, listening intently.
Scarlett’s eyes narrowed into a cold, calculating squint. "That makes sense. When he got knocked unconscious, I had already been thrown over the edge, and Julian was diving after me... He probably assumed we went down together. And since we're purposely keeping our survival a secret, he needed a concrete story to report back to Kane."
Hearing this, Scarlett and Julian exchanged a triumphant look, both of them smiling.
Julian leaned toward the phone. "Stellan, we owe you one. Scarlett and I are stuck at Azure Estates for the time being, so we have to rely entirely on you and your team to navigate this. Once you secure that financial evidence, we'll have everything we need to bury them all."
Scarlett’s eyes gleamed with a deadly sharpness. "Yes. But you have to be extremely careful. Heath is paranoid by nature. We cannot afford to spook him."
