Chapter 6
I sighed heavily.
I had to straighten this kid out, right now.
“Who do they think they are, talking smack like that? They’re dead wrong.”
“If I ever catch them, I’ll give them hell. And a punch in the face.”
“But listen to me, Meg. You can’t talk about yourself that way.”
“It breaks my heart.”
I kept ranting until I fell asleep.
I didn’t know what happened next.
While I slept, Meg snuggled up to me and watched over me.
Her dress flickered, shifting rapidly from blood-red to pure white and back again.
Then, she whispered.
“It makes Mommy sad. I can’t make Mommy sad.”
The chat feed exploded.
[I’ve never seen her stats flip like that! The dress turned white!]
[Holy shit. This newbie actually overwrote the Blood Girl’s stats. She’s the real deal.]
The cold drone of the System woke me the next morning.
[Initial Players: 30. Survivors: 15.]
I fumbled for my phone, bleary-eyed, and checked the group chat.
Five more people were dead.
Three taken by monsters.
Two others saw something, hit 100 Sanity, and died of fright.
A private message from Scarlett flashed on the screen.
[Alice, hon, are you okay? I was fighting off monsters on the second floor all night and couldn’t reach you.]

[You need to bond with your “family” ASAP. I remember this from Sterling’s old run.]
[Take this tip as my apology. I feel awful for not warning you about the selection trap and letting you get stuck on the 30th floor.]
Scarlett was busy playing the saint in the main chat, dishing out advice to the rookies.
Justin piped up occasionally to play bad cop.
[Why bother helping them? You’re too soft. Dead weight just drags us down.]
Scarlett shot back a sanctimonious reply.
[Fate brought us together. Let’s not be so calculating.]
Of course, the survivors were treating Scarlett like the Second Coming.
These two veterans were putting on quite a show.
I grinned and pressed my nose to the screen to reply.
[I’m doing great. Thanks for asking.]
Across the room, the Boss was doing curls.
He was using his own severed head in one hand and Meg Summers in the other for weights.
He saw the phone in my hand and frowned, knowing exactly who it was.
“Don’t trust…”
He crumpled, clutching his chest before he could finish.
Meg’s eyes went wide and she caught him, looking terrified.
I lunged forward and caught him before he hit the floor.
The dungeon has a strict rule against spoilers.
