Chapter 31
(Daisy’s POV)
Considering how familiarly disturbing this was, I should have left.
That was the logical thing to do.
Walk away, go to class, pretend none of that just happened, and maybe- if the universe was feeling generous, have the rest of my
day be normal.
But apparently, normal had been discontinued from my life.
Because instead of walking away properly, my attention stayed split.
Part of me was still aware of Josh behind me, of his presence, his voice, the weight of everything he had just said.
And the other part… The more urgent part- was locked onto the man across the field.
He hadn’t moved. Not even slightly. He was still standing there, still watching. And the longer I looked, the more certain I became.
That had to be one of DeLuca’s men. There was no way it wasn’t.
I slowed my steps without meaning to, my gaze flicking back toward him again.
“Running already?” Josh’s voice came from behind me, sharp and amused. “What happened? Realized you can’t keep up?”
I exhaled slowly. I was over his banter.
“I have to go,” I said, without turning back.
“Yeah, go,” he called after me. “That’s what you’re good at anyway. Walking away and pretending things didn’t happen.”
I heard it, every gaslighting word, but I didn’t stop. Didn’t respond and didn’t give him anything. Because for the first time in a long
time, I didn’t feel the need to.
And that alone felt like progress.
I kept walking. But was still looking. Still aware and still tracking the man across the field like my brain had decided he was more
important than everything else.
Because he was.
If he was who I thought he was, then this wasn’t just uncomfortable. It was controlled.
Monitored, and that thought didn’t sit well with me at all.
My instinct now was finally to leave. Disappear into a crowd, change direction, get somewhere busy, somewhere unpredictable. Avoid him, them and everything.
But then something changed. Because as I kept walking, as that thought tried to take hold, another one pushed its way in. Stronger.
