Chapter 292
{Daisy’s POV}
He swung the first arc baton at Aria with the kind of casual force that suggested he genuinely believed this
would be over quickly.
She ducked.
– dropping low and sliding sideways, putting an entire corner of the room between them before he’d finished resetting his footing. My back pressed instinctively against the nearest wall, every instinct in my body screaming at me to become as small and unnoticeable as physically possible.
–
Aria’s hand closed around something on a nearby shelf a decorative glass piece, heavy and ornate, the kind of thing that belonged in a museum display case rather than a mafia base.
She hurled it at him without hesitating.
It shattered against his shoulder in a bright, useless spray of glass.
He staggered, more from the surprise than the impact, and came right back at her, throwing a fist meant less to connect and more to terrify her into freezing.
It nearly worked. On me, at least, watching from my corner with my heart trying to climb directly out of
my throat.
Aria didn’t freeze.
She twisted away from the punch and lunged for a heavier vase resting near the wall, swinging it in one clean motion directly into the side of his head.
I tensed.
The impact staggered him properly this time, a groan tearing out of him as he stumbled back a full step, one hand rising toward the fresh gash the vase had left behind.
Aria used the opening instantly, rushing toward me, reaching for my arm like she actually intended to get us both out of this room in the next five seconds.

She didn’t get the chance.
He recovered faster than either of us expected, lashing out with a kick that caught her leg out from under
her before she even saw it coming.
She fell and almost immediately, his full weight dropped toward her, both arc batons already buzzing,
already close to her face.
She grabbed his arms.
She threw her entire body into holding him back.
And from her position flat on the floor, I could see exactly how badly matched that fight actually was and
this made my heart thump.
He had easily twice her mass. Whatever strength she’d trained into herself over however many years of this
life, it wasn’t going to be enough on its own.
I didn’t know what to do.
I genuinely, completely did not know what to do, and my eyes darted around the room searching for
anything- a weapon, a distraction, a miracle. I would have taken any of the three.
Then Aria yelled.
I looked up to see both her hands wrapped “directly” around the batons themselves, gripping them,
holding them away from her face with her own bare palms taking the full brunt of the current.
Horror slammed into me so fast it felt physical.
She was being shocked. Actively, continuously, her whole body trembling with it, as the man above her
groaned with the effort of forcing his weight down harder, like her palms alone weren’t giving him enough
resistance to feel satisfied.
I stayed frozen, useless, watching her palm start to blister right in front of me. I didn’t know what to do
and terror glued me in place.
And so I witnessed the horror.
Then, in one sudden, deliberate motion, Aria twisted her body sideways, sliding herself entirely out from

beneath him.
His full upper body dropped.
Straight down, face–first, directly onto the batons still clenched in his own hands.
