Chapter 27
(Daisy’s POV)
Okay.
Moment of truth.
I stood in front of the door and reached for the handle, already imagining the dramatic reunion where I walk in, collapse on my bed, and reconnect with civilization like a long-lost citizen returning from exile.
The handle didn’t move.
I blinked before I recalled.
“…Right.”
Locked.
Of course it was. Because unlike me, who had spent the last couple of days being passed around like an unwanted package between criminal organizations, Lillian actually had a life to run. She left the house. She went places. She functioned like a normal human being.
Must be nice.
I stepped back and stared at the door for a second, then sighed.
“There’s a spare key. Almost forgot.”
I moved toward the potted plant by the corner of the hallway, crouched, and dug into the dirt a bit.
There it was.
The key, hidden under dirt like some kind of low-budget treasure.
Don’t judge me. It made sense at the time.
I grabbed it, stood up, and unlocked the door. And then, I paused, just for a second. Because suddenly, it felt… weird.
Like I was about to step into a version of my life that didn’t quite fit anymore. I pushed the door open eventually.
Warm.
That was the first thing.
Warm air, familiar and still. It didn’t smell like gunpowder or metal or stress-induced decision making.
It smelled like… home.
I stepped inside slowly, closing the door behind me, my eyes scanning the space like I was seeing it for the first time.
Two sides.
Two lives.
Lillian’s side-organized chaos, clothes that looked intentionally thrown, a mirror with sticky notes, and energy that screamed main character in a completely different genre.
My side- slightly less chaotic, slightly more… mine.
My bed.
My table.
My things.
I dropped my bag without thinking and walked further in, my fingers brushing lightly over surfaces as I passed.
