Chapter 18
“He told us,” the man added, already turning away again, “he has no business here. He left after that.”
The door opened, closed. And just like that, I was alone again.
I stared at the door for a second before driving my gaze into space and staring at nothing.
Okay.
I pressed my lips together slightly, letting out a slow breath.
“Well,” I said quietly to the empty room.
“That went well.”
(DeLuca’s POV)
The gates opened before the convoy fully slowed and men were already moving before the engines cut.
Injured.
Bleeding.
Some walking. Some not.
I stepped out of the vehicle without waiting for assistance, the gravel crunching beneath my shoes as I moved straight toward the house.
I trudged angrily.
Behind me, my men carried the others in and orders were already being shouted.
Movement. Urgency.
I ignored all of it.
I pushed through the front doors and headed straight for the main room. The one where order was maintained. I didn’t slow down until I reached my seat.
Then I sat.
The room went quiet for a moment.
“Call the primary line for an urgent meeting,” I ordered and one of the men near the doorway nodded immediately and stepped out.
I leaned back slightly, my gaze fixed ahead.
Roman Volkov.
He hadn’t shown up.
He had known and had anticipated the trap- taken advantage of it.
A faint shift settled in my chest, disturbing and persistent.
Footsteps approached then. I didn’t look.
“Hey, man,” Nico’s voice came, casual as ever. He stared for a moment, then…
“So… I’m guessing that didn’t go well.”
“We didn’t get him.” I said and Nico exhaled lightly.
“Yeah. That tracks.”
I turned my gaze slightly.
“He tricked us.”
Nico seemed to think for a moment.
“You were trying to trick him also.” He responded then and my gaze tightened on him.
