Chapter 13
He didn’t even look at me, so I paused and waited before exhaling sharply and dragging a hand through my hair.
“Okay,” I muttered. “Fine. Love the communication today, DeLuca. Very interactive.”
He still ignored me and I stared at him for a second longer, like maybe if I looked hard enough he’d remember how conversations worked.
He didn’t.
Fine!
I turned away and dropped onto a low concrete ledge, crossing my arms as I watched everything unfold.
If he wasn’t going to tell me, I’d figure it out myself.
I tracked their movements carefully now.
The way they split into groups. The way they moved toward specific points. The way they crouched, placed things and adjusted something-
My eyes narrowed.
Wait.
I leaned forward slightly.
One of the men pressed something against the ground at a distance while another ran a thin wire along the edge of a wall.
My stomach dipped.
No..
I pushed to my feet slowly.
No way..
I walked a few steps closer, my gaze locking onto one of the devices.
“…DeLuca,” I said, sharper now before I turned fully to him. “What is that?”
My voice went up.
“Is that a bomb?” I stared at him while he stared ahead ignorantly.
“You’re not even going to pretend I’m wrong?”
Still nothing.
I let out a short, disbelieving laugh and pointed again.
“Wow.” I said but my chest tightened.
I looked back at the men; At the wires at the placement and at the way everything was connected dangerously. A laugh slipped ou of me then, quiet and incredulous.
“You’ve got to be kidding me.”
I looked back at him.
“Those are bombs, DeLuca.” I said with certainty now and waited for his response or any reaction.
None came so I nodded slowly to myself.
“Okay,” I said under my breath. “So we’re just not addressing that.”
