He Came Back Running (Maya and Mason) novel Chapter 276

Chapter 276

Alex’s POV

The call came at seven. Maya was cutting fruit at the counter.

I looked at the screen.

The board chair’s number.

I had not heard from him directly since the day I walked into the boardroom and heard six to two.

I answered…

“We need you back,” he said.

No preamble.

“The company has become unstable,” he continued. “Two major investors have signalled intent to withdraw their positions if governance stability isn’t restored within the quarter. Three of the senior executive team have submitted competing restructuring proposals and are actively working against each other in the process. Operational decisions that should take days are taking weeks because no one has the authority to make final calls.” He paused. “We need you back.”

I looked at Maya….

She had stopped cutting the fruit.

“When?” I said.

“This morning,” he said. “The board is assembled. We’re waiting.”

The boardroom.

The same faces from the room where I had heard six to two.

I looked around the table before I sat.

The chairman stood.

“Alex,” he said. “We want you back”

I looked at him.

At the table.

“If I return,” I said, “things will be different.”

The room was quiet.

“I want complete control over company security,” I said. “Not shared authority, not a committee structure. The security infrastructure that failed to prevent someone from using my credentials while I was unconscious for two months will report directly to me and to no other executive layer.” I looked around the table. “Financial approvals over a threshold I’ll specify will require dual authorisation…. mine and one other verified signatory, with a mandatory secondary confirmation step that didn’t

exist before.”

I paused.

“And executive access,” I said. “Every credential, every level of the system, gets rebuilt from scratch. Nothing carries over from the previous architecture. Anyone who wants to keep their access reapplies for it under the new protocol.”

The board looked at each other.

“that’s a considerable expansion of executive authority,” one director said.

“It’s the minimum required to prevent what happened from happening again, “said. “You had a credential fraud that ran for two months, undetected, moving significant capital while I was unconscious. You had a fabricated allegation that removed me from the company at the exact moment the investigation into that fraud was accelerating. You had a leaked corporate breach that damaged the stock and the company’s public standing simultaneously.” I held the chairman’s gaze. “None of that was random. Someone inside understood exactly how to hurt this company and this family. I am not walking back into a structure that allows that to happen again.”

Silence.

The chairman looked at the table

Then at me.

“Agreed,” he said

Maya was waiting outside the boardroom.

She had not come in…. the deliberate choice of two people who had understood, without discussing it, that this conversation was mine to have alone, that the board needed to see me negotiate from my own position rather than from a position that included her presence.

She looked up when I came through the door.

“So?” she said.

I crossed to her.

Slipped my hand into hers.

“I’m going back,” I said.

The smile.

The full, proud version.

I held it for a moment before I said the rest.

“On my terms,” I said. “Full security control. Rebuilt access architecture. No one carries over.”

“Good,” she said.

She held my gaze.

“You were betrayed from inside once,” she said.

“Yes,” I said.

“Make sure you know exactly who’s standing beside you this time,” she said

“I intend to,” I said.

The afternoon.

I walked back into Voss Maritime for the first time since the day I had walked out with a folder and a cold clarity about what had been built against me.

The floor received me the way floors received someone who had been through something the entire company had watched….

I let myself receive it.

Briefly.

Then I went to work.

The new security director was already at the desk that had been prepared for the position…. a role I had insisted on creating specifically, reporting directly to me, staffed by someone Fielding had personally vetted through a process that had taken longer than the board wanted and that had insisted on regardless.

She handed me a report.

“Preliminary findings,” she said. “The full audit will take weeks, but I wanted you to see the initial pattern immediately.”

I opened it

Transactions.

Not the credential fraud transactions… Reeves already had those, documented and confirmed. These were different.

Smaller.

More recent.

I read through the transactions.

Recurring payments to a vendor entity that had no verifiable service history.

A procurement approval that had bypassed the standard review process through an emergency authorisation that had been signed by someone whose signature I did not immediately recognise.

Access logs showing entry into the financial systems architecture during the exact window when the board had been debating my reinstatement…. as though someone had understood the reinstatement was coming and had used the remaining window to do something before the new structure was in place.

I looked up.
