He Came Back Running (Maya and Mason) novel Chapter 273

Chapter 273

Mason’s POV

The room was a letting.

Not a hotel…. hotels had records, had cameras in the lobby and on the floors.

The television was the room’s primary furniture.

I had been watching it for six hours.

The coverage of Brenda’s death had changed the register twice since the initial reports

A witness dies in custody.

The investigation compromised.

Who had access to her…

Brenda is gone but her death has opened another window of Investigation.

The two men arrived at eleven.

I had not looked away from the television when the door opened.

I had listened to them enter, had registered their footsteps…

“You did what you were supposed to do,” I said.

Still watching the screen.

“No mistakes?”

“None,” the first one said.

I nodded.

Then you are all dismissed…..

The door closed.

The tension.

I allowed it to exist now that the room was empty….

Not much.

The shoulders.

A single exhale.

Then back.

Brenda’s death had been necessary.

Not from anger…. I had not been angry at her. She had been an instrument in a situation that had required instruments, and when the instrument had turned toward someone else, the logical response was to remove the instrument from play.

Necessary.

And it had created the specific, precise problem that necessary things in situations like this one always created…. Murder.

Not alleged. Nut connected.

Someone inside the facility had helped.

Which meant the facility would now be examining everyone connected to the facility.

Which meant the chain of removes that connected me to the inside contact was now under active examination.

Chains of removes, under examination, resolved at different speeds depending on their construction.

Mine was well-constructed.

But well-constructed was not the same as permanent.

The table.

“I need a way out,” I said.

To the table. To the scattered documents. To the empty room.

Her name popped

Zara.

Her name in the documents, because her name had appeared in my monitoring… not from activity, from its absence.

She had been quiet.

I had given the instruction to find her.

I had received the message: stop looking for Zara.

I had not received ari explanation of who had sent the message or what it meant.

Both of those facts were information.

Someone was protecting her….

Someone wanted me not to find her.

Someone who knew I had given the instruction and who had enough reach into my communications to know the timing of it.

I looked at her contact on the phone.

Stared at it.

Then set the phone down….

Not yet.

If she had betrayed me… and the probability had been rising for weeks, in the specific way that probabilities rose when the evidence accumulated without resolution, then calling her would not give me what I needed.

Calling her would give her what she needed.

My location.

My voice, which could now be confirmed as active and therefore somewhere.

My urgency, which she would read accurately

I needed proof before I made my move.

Not the assumption

The proof.

The secure file.

The encrypted archive that contained the remaining asset documentation… the accounts that had not been found, the properties not connected to my registered name, the particular financial survival architecture of someone who had understood that the day it was needed might come.

I opened the access interface.

Entered the credentials.

The access log appeared before the archive did.

Standard.

The log that recorded every access attempt… successful and unsuccessful, with the timestamp and the credential used.

I read the log.

My last access: forty-seven hours ago.

The access before that: seventy-two hours ago.

Between those two entries.

Another entry.

Not mine.

The credential was different… not my primary credential, not the backup. A third method, one that existed in the architecture as

a contingency and that I had tested once during the initial setup and had not used since.

Accessed.

Successfully.

Forty-one hours ago.

While I had been in the boathouse, moving through the passage, getting into the car.

While I had been driving secondary roads and watching billboards.

Someone had been in my system.

I looked at the log…..

At the timestamp.

At the credential method.
