Chapter 272
Brenda’s POV
The cooperation had been going for eleven days.
The releasing was taking time.
I had not been arrested yet.
This was the thing my lawyer kept confirming….. Not arrested.
Cooperating.
The distinction had legal significance that I was still mapping.
The cooperation was producing results…. the investigators had said this, in the fat, professional way of people who communicated factual assessments rather than reassurances.
The network connected to Mason’s financial operations was being identified. The corporate architecture of the
arrangement was being mapped. People who had been invisible were becoming visible.
Because of what I was giving them.
This was worth something.
What it was worth was still being determined.
The change happened on the ninth day.
Not dramatic…. A person I had not seen before.
Present twice in the corridor outside the interview room.
Not a detective. Not a prosecutor’s representative. Not a facility officer…. I knew the facility officers by now, the rotation of faces that had become familiar in the way of any environment you occupied for an extended period.
Someone else.
I asked to see my lawyer at the end of the ninth day’s session.
He arrived that evening.
I told him what I had seen.
He listened.
“I’ll request additional monitoring,” he said.
“I already have monitoring,” I said. “The facility already has monitoring. That’s not what I’m asking for.”
He looked at me.
“I’m asking for protection,” I said. “Not surveillance. Protection. Someone who understands that what I’m providing is significant enough that the people it implicates have a motivation to prevent it from being provided.”
He wrote.
“I’ll make the request formally,” he said. “Through the appropriate channel.”
The appropriate channel…

The session Un the tenth day.
The corridor afterward.
The person was not visible.
Which was not the same as not present
I walked with the officer who had been assigned to escort me between the interview room and my accommodation.
The corridors in this facility had their own geography…. the institutional layout of a place that had been designed with security in mind and that I had been learning for eleven days.
The eastern corridor….
The junction at the third block.
The figure….
Not the same one
Different.
At the junction.
I stopped.
The officer beside me.
“There,” I said.
The officer looked.
At the junction.
At the figure, who had already begun moving…. the smooth movement of someone who had anticipated the identification and had prepared the response, which was simply to become part of the corridor’s normal traffic.
“Ma’am…”
“Someone is watching me,” I said. “That was not a facility officer and that was not a detainee and they were positioned at that junction with a direct sight line to this corridor”
The officer’s radio.
The call.
The response
The corridor becoming busy.
Movement, voices, the purposeful activity of people responding to a reported concern.
I stood in it,
Watching the junction.
The figure was gone.
That evening.
The cell

The notebook on the table the s physical record I had been building alongside the formal cooperation, the additional layer of documentation that I had decided to maintain independently of what i gave the investigators.
Names.
Dates.
The page I had been working on that day.
Few hours later, when most of the officers were gone, officers on afternoon shifts were clearing their tables for those on evening shift… I had sat in my cell comfortable but not relaxed. My attention focused on the notebook, when two officers
approached my cell, the first officer familiar, I had been with him most of the day, then the second officer stränge and seems he will be in for the evening….
The First officer gives him the key to my cell, a check book in his hands and hands it over to him… I didn’t bother to access or look at him. My attention was still on the Notebook and the information I was trying to transfer inside it.
A large hard grabs my mouth, and an arm holding my neck.
I couldn’t make a sound….
I tried to pull his hand away from my mouth but the more I did that, the more his strong arms pressed tightly on my neck…
I could barely see the light rays coming from the bulb…. everything slowly turning to darkness.

ZARA’S POV
The folder was placed on the table before either detective spoke
Not the same room as before…. a different one… I sat.
Kept my hands still on the table.
Waited for whichever version of this conversation was going to arrive.
I had expected the standard follow-up.
The lead detective looked at me.
“We know you helped Mason,” he said. “We also know you weren’t just some innocent person who happened to be around him.”
My stomach tightened a little…
I did not speak. Not even in defence.
The years of professional environments had taught me the value of silence in rooms where the other person had more information than you did and was choosing when to reveal it.
He continued without pausing….
“We can charge you for your involvement,” he said. “Conspiracy. Facilitation of the harassment. The corridor incident.” He held my gaze. “We have the recording, the payment structure, the testimony from other witnesses who can place you at the scene…”
I looked at the folder.
“But we’re willing to make a deal,” he said.
I waited.

“We believe Mason is connected to something considerably larger than the operation against Alex Voss,” he said. “The financial sabotage at Hale Group. The attempt to take Hargrove Meridian through the ownership claim. The shell company network moving significant capital through structures we’re still mapping.” He paused. “All of it appears connected. We need someone who understands how Mason thinks… his patterns, his methodology, his contacts.”
I stared at him.
They were not asking me to help find a fugitive.
They were investigating something considerably larger than Mason.
Something Mason had never fully explained to me.
The corporate takeover
The cates that predated his operation against Maya and Alex.
The company I had traced back through his older payments.
They knew.
Or they were close enough to knowing that they needed exactly what I had been assembling in the additional device, in the folder I had not yet given anyone.
“Help us find Mason,” the detective said. “And we’ll take your cooperation into consideration when your involvement is formally reviewed.” He held my gaze….
“I’m not going to pretend you did nothing. You participated in a serious harm against Alex Voss and, through him, against his family. That’s real. That happened.” A pause. “But if you help us uncover the people behind what’s actually running underneath this, that will factor into how your case is handled.”
I looked at him.
At the folder….
I understood exactly what he was offering.
A chance.
Not forgiveness.
A chance.
I had already betrayed Mason once.
The recordings.
The photograph.
The messages I had copied and distributed across devices…..
I had told myself, across the weeks of the arrangement, that I had been building protection.
I understood now that I had been building something else.
The beginning of a decision I had not yet fully made.
Whether to protect myself by limiting what I gave.

OF Whether to complete the thing I had started.
“What exactly do you need?” said.
My voice arrived steadier than Thad expected.
The detective looked at his colleague.
Something passed between them…..
“Everything you have,” he said. “Not just the operation against the Voss family. Everything connected to the larger financial architecture. The companies, the dates, the payment structures, anyone Mason mentioned who exists outside the operation you were directly part of.”
I thought about the folder on my third device.
The comparative timeline.
The company that connected to Hargrove Meridian.
“There’s something I need to show you,” I said.
I opened my bag.
Took out the device.
Set it on the table beside their folder.
“I found this myself,” I said. “Not from Mason directly…. from his older payment records. Structures that predate the operation against Alex and Maya by years.” I looked at the detective. “There’s a company. It connects to the Hargrove Meridian ownership claim. There’s a name on the advisory board that I recognised from a photograph connected to Maya’s father.”
