He Came Back Running (Maya and Mason) novel Chapter 254

Chapter 254

Maya’s POV

I heard Alex on the stairs.

He came through the kitchen door.

I had been watching his face for long enough to read it…

It was always calm.

I poured coffee for him. Set it in front of the chair beside mine.

Waited.

“The investigators froze several accounts,” he said

He had sat down.

Both hands around the cup.

“They believe someone used my credentials while I was unconscious. To authorise transactions.” He looked at the table. “The provisional hold is standard procedure… that’s what they said. But it covers the operational accounts.”

I looked at him

“The accounts that run the company’s day-to-day obligations,” I said.

“Yes,” he said.

Salaries. Contracts. The continuous, non-negotiable financial obligations of a company that operated around the clock.

Frozen.

I reached across the table.

His hand.

“We’ll prove the truth,” I said.

He nodded.

My phone vibrated on the counter

Not a call… the banking application notification.

I had a supplier payment scheduled for the morning…. a routine transaction, the kind that ran automatically, that

I attended to as a matter of administration rather than decision.

I opened the application.

Transaction Declined. Account Under Financial Review.

I looked at the screen.

Read it again.

Opened the second account

118

The household account.

+15 PWS

The one that had no connection to the corporate investigation…. the personal account, maintained separately, the account that had existed long before Voss Maritime and all of it.

Transaction Declined. Account Under Financial Review.

I set the phone on the table

Alex looked at it.

At my face.

He did not say anything

Neither did I.

The calls began at eight-fifteen.

The financial advisor…. the one who managed the investment portfolios, the one I had spoken to last a month ago in a conversation about the twins and the estate planning.

Several portfolios were under temporary restriction.

Not permanently.

Pending….

Pending was the word that appeared in every communication across the next hour.

Pending the investigation’s completion

Pending regulatory review.

Pending the resolution of the provisional hold.

The legal team called some hours letter…..

The luxury assets associated with the Voss account structure were subject to review.

Not seized.

Reviewed

Which occupied a space that the law had designed specifically so that the word seized was not technically accurate while the effect was functionally similar.

The house, which was in Alex’s name.

The aircraft, which was in mine

The château, which we had purchased in Paris and which existed in the corporate structure in a way that the review encompassed.

At nine-twenty, the routine business payments that I had scheduled for Hargrove Meridian’s operational accounts returned the same error the personal account had returned.

Transaction Declined. Account Under Financial Review

I sat in the kitchen.

The morning had stopped being the ordinary kind.

The ordinary kind did not produce this.

For the first time, money could not solve the immediate problem.

Not because we had no money

Because the money was behind a wall.

I looked around the kitchen.

At the house

I reached across the table.

My hand against his cheek

“We may lose our wealth,” I said.

I said it plainly.

“But we are not losing each other,” I said.

He looked at me

The expression underneath the composure.

The one that was not fear and not anger

What it was, I understood now, was grief….

My hand on his cheek.

His hand finding mine.

“No,” he said. “We’re not.”

His phone rang

He looked at the screen.

He answered.

I watched his face as he listened.

The composure

The underneath.

He ended the call.

Set the phone down.

Looked at me….

“The board meeting started twenty minutes ago,” he said.

+15 RLS

+15 80/10

I waited.

Without me,” he said.

I looked at him

“And….” He stopped.

The pause of someone choosing how to say the next thing.

“They’re not planning to keep me as CEO”
