Chapter 245: 245. Home I

Maisie

I threw my bloodied hands up to shield myself on instinct, but rather than get chopped up in its mouth like dinner, another round of gun fire cracked above me and the creature let out another horrendous shriek.

It staggered back and I lowered my hand for another shot, to see the bullet fly and land in the spot between the creature’s eyes.

It jerked but stayed upright and snarled at something behind me.

My spine tingled with awareness and I knew one of my mates was here.

A third bullet flew. A fourth. A fifth. In quick succession. The creature’s shrieks grew louder, its head snapping back, and black blood splashed all over the earth around me as it tried to steer, to get off the ground.

Another bullet found its wing and its massive body tipped to the side, and it collapsed into me, crushing me to the ground when a final bullet blasted through its skull.

The weight of it stole all the air from my lungs and I panted, staring at the skies and cursing and thanking the goddess for both my terrible luck and my wonderful luck for always getting myself in positions where I was bound to get killed.

The sound of boots snapping branches teased my ear, just as a very angry face appeared in my field of vision.

Soren.

His expression was dark enough to blot out daylight. "Clearly the collar and tracker weren’t enough for you," he said, voice tight with anger. "How would you like to be chained to a post next time, Adams?"

"Maybe get this thing off me first?" I wheezed.

His left eye twitched. He brought the phone to his ear without looking away from me. "I found her."

Then those strong hands rolled the heavy corpse off my body. I sucked in four desperate breaths before my eyes snagged on the gun still hanging from his fingers.

"How did you know how to kill it?" I rasped.

Soren extended a hand. I took it and let him pull me into a sitting position. The contact sent a sharp current straight up my arm.

"We’ve been hunting those things for months. Took an entire unit of guards to figure out where was most vulnerable. They’ve never come this close to the Academy before."

He dropped into a crouch in front of me. Without warning, he gripped my chin and turned my face left, then right, inspecting every mark.

His gaze dropped lower, to the open shirt, the blood, my still-bleeding knee and his expression grew stormier with every second. "Who hurt you?"

I tried to pull away. "I’m fine—"

His fingers tightened, yanking my face forward until we were only an inch apart. His breath was cool mint and clean aftershave, and it made my stomach flip.

"I’ll have no more of your lies, Adams." The words were spoken softly and intimately. "Unless you want a repeat of our last lesson on the consequences of keeping secrets right here, right now, you will answer me. Honestly."

I recalled what lesson in particular he was talking about.

The kind that involved bending me over a surface roughly, skirt shoved up, his hands bruising my hips as he painted the back of my thighs with his cum.

My mouth went dry. Heat flooded my cheeks. "The guard," I said begrudgingly. "The leader. He... attacked me. He worked for the Queen."

Calculating violet eyes tracked mine. "And do these attacks happen often?"

I didn’t respond.

Soren’s grip on my jaw tightened but his thumb flicked over the smarting skin where I had been slapped. "What happened to you, May?"

My eyes stung and my lips quivered.
