Margaret had figured this whole fake, polite routine would drag on for at least another half hour-typical of stuffy noble banquets. But she’d clearly underestimated just how unhinged Greven was.

He wasn’t gonna waste any time with build-up at all.

Greven finished his drink, held the empty glass, and started walking toward Margaret-or so it seemed. But right as he took his second step, he “accidentally” tripped over his own feet.

The delicate crystal wine glass in his hand slammed hard against the marble floor. It shattered into dozens of tiny pieces with a sharp. piercing crack.

The second the glass broke, all hell broke loose.

From the two lines of guards in the corners, several men suddenly let out guttural, animalistic roars. Their clothes ripped apart as their muscles bulged out of control, and dark green insectoid shell patterns crawled across their skin. Their eyes burned bright red, and drool dripped down their chins.

A handful of nobles screamed and scattered in every direction.

The rampaging test subjects didn’t go after the nobles. They charged straight for Margaret and Cheiron.

Cheiron reacted instantly. He shoved Margaret behind him with one hand and drew his energy pistol with the other, firing a perfect shot into the lead test subject’s knee.

It did nothing. The monster didn’t even slow down. It kept lunging forward, dragging its useless leg behind

“Protect Lady Margaret!” Greven shouted from the upper level, barking the order.

A squad of fully armed Royal Guards poured in through the side doors. They didn’t move to fight the rampaging test subjects-they surrounded Margaret instead.

“Lady Margaret, it’s too dangerous here. Come with us to the safe zone.” The lead guard captain didn’t wait for an answer. He reached out to grab Margaret’s arm.

The plan had changed. This was never about forcing her to purify anything.

Greven wasn’t even gonna keep up the act. He wanted to take her straight away.

“Fuck off.” Cheiron’s voice was ice-cold. He fired a shot right at the captain’s feet.

But the rampaging test subjects were already on top of them. Cheiron was forced to turn and fight-one huge monster lunged at his throat, its mouth full of sharp, jagged teeth.

“Take her.” Greven gave the order coldly from the second floor.

The Royal Guards swarmed her. Margaret didn’t fight back. She glanced once ai Cheiron, who was pinned down by several monsters, then went quietly with the guards into the elevator by the side door,

The elevator dropped straight down, A wave of weightlessness washed over her.

The clevator opened onto a metal hallway. The air recked of harsh disinfectant-exactly the same smell as the underground labs at the Academy of Sciences.

The Royal Guards shoved her into a large lab, and the door clicked shut behind her.

A huge medical pod sat in the center of the room, tangled with all kinds of wires and tubes.

“Sorry for the scare, Lady Margaret.” Greven walked in through a second door.

He’d taken off his fancy royal coat and tossed it carelessly over the back of a chair.

Margaret glanced around the room, her tone calm. “Interesting way to treat a guest, Your Highness.”

“Special circumstances.” Greven stepped in front of her, staring at her like she was some perfect work of art. “It’s chaos out there. Those test subjects have completely lost control. This is the safest place for you.”

“Test subjects?” Margaret played dumb, “Why would there be anything like that in the palace?”

“They won’t be around much longer,” Greven smiled. “They’ve served their final purpose. Tomorrow, the whole galaxy will hear that a sudden insectoid contamination hit the palace. And I-I fought tooth and nail to protect the SSS-class female, As for the nobles who didn’t make it… Well, someone has to make sacrifices for the Empire’s future.”

Margaret saw the full picture now.

Greven never planned to use her purification powers at all. He was using these test subjects to wipe out his enemies and using the chaos as an excuse to take her for himself.

“Clever plan.” Margaret stepped back half a step and leaned against the metal lab table. “Why’d you bring me down here? To draw my blood? Carve me up?”

“No, no, no.” Greven shook his head repeatedly. “You’re the galaxy’s most precious treasure. I’d never hurt you. I just need you to do one small favor for me.”

He walked over to the medical pod and pressed a button.

The pod door slid open. Someone was lying inside-or rather, some half-beastman, half-insectoid monster. Its chest rose and fell faintly, its skin coated in dark green slime. It looked female, probably S-

class.

Margaret had braced herself for something bad, but her stomach still turned.

“This is my greatest work,” Greven’s eyes burned with fanaticism. “We’re one step away. With your SSS- class spiritual power as the bridge, insectoid and beastman genes will fuse perfectly. We’ll shatter the rank system. We’ll create a perfect being.”

“You’re insane,” Margaret snapped.

“Madmen are the ones who make history.” Greven turned and walked toward her, holding a syringe full of bright blue liquid. “Just a little nerve paralyzer, and you’ll sleep like a baby. When you wake up, you’ll be the mother of a whole new world.”
