Chapter 173 Build The Perfect Being
Margaret froze.
Forced genetic fusion? Live experimentation?
A name popped into her head instantly-Harold.

No matter how deep her bad blood with Phoebe ran, staring at this mess didn’t spark any satisfaction. Just a bone-deep chill—the kind only another female could feel, sharp and visceral.
“Wasn’t she supposed to be locked up in the Empire’s maximum security prison?” She stood up straight, keeping her voice low and tight. “Her trial’s not till the end of the month. Even if she’s only B-class, she’s still a female-a registered, high-priority ward of the Empire. How the hell did she end up like this, here of all places?”
“They found her on a barren planet just outside Prime Planet.” Cheiron turned to look at Margaret, noting how pale her face had gone. “And not by official channels. A female dragged her husbands out there for a thrill, found her half-dead in an abandoned mine shaft.”
A rare edge of sarcasm crept into his voice. “They wanted clout, so they didn’t call the cops. Just filmed the whole thing and dumped it on Starnet. Hit 20 million views in three hours, blew up every comment section. The higher-ups only ordered a full investigation when they couldn’t bury the story anymore. If the public hadn’t lost it? This thing never would’ve made it to the Academy of Sciences.”
“Someone high up’s covering for them.” Margaret’s mind was racing a mile a minute. “Phoebe couldn’t just sprout wings and walk out of the Security Bureau prison. And if she’d escaped on her own? You would’ve heard about it. No way something that big stays quiet.”
She paused, a thought clicking into place. “What about her three A-class husbands? They’re missing, too?”
Cheiron shook his head. “Still waiting on the Security Bureau’s official response. Don’t hold your breath, though. They’ve got a million excuses ready to go.”
A cold chill ran down Margaret’s spine. “You think the Imperial Household’s behind this?”
Cheiron didn’t say a word. He just gave a small, slow nod.
Margaret’s first instinct was to call Primo in her head, have it scan the tank for hard data. “Primo? I need you on this.”
There was nothing, no chipper, snappy reply like usual.
She called two more times-still radio silence.
The stupid system never shuts up normally-why the hell is it playing dead now? Is it being jammed? We are so close to Central Brain’s core down here. The signal is already messy enough as is.
“What about Central Brain?” Margaret turned to Cheiron. “Phoebe turns into this, and Central Brain didn’t send out a single alert? I thought every citizen had a tracking bio-terminal implant built in.”
“That’s why we brought her here-waiting on Central Brain’s official ruling.” Cheiron nodded at the blinking red light on top of the glass tank.

He walked over to the control panel and pulled up a 3D scan. It showed a cross-section of Phoebe’s neck- the spot where the bio-terminal should’ve sat was completely hollowed out.
“They carved out the whole back of her neck. Took a chunk of her spine with it.” Cheiron’s tone was flat, matter-of-fact. “A normal beastman would’ve died instantly from that much damage. She’s only hanging on right now because the insectoid cells in her body are forcing her to heal, keeping her alive against all odds.
“To Central Brain’s monitoring network? Phoebe’s already dead.”
Evading Central Brain surveillance, removing tracking implants, and conducting cruel, twisted gene- fusion experiments on living subjects. Whoever was behind this wielded serious top-level power and influence.
Cheiron had clearly come to the same conclusion. He frowned, staring hard at the twitching monster in the tank.
Margaret forced down her nausea and looked back at the bulbous growths on the creature’s back. They rose and fell in a slow, steady rhythm. There was definitely something alive, wriggling around under the surface.
“Has to be Harold’s work.” Cheiron’s voice cut through the thick, quiet air. “Bet he didn’t get the results he wanted from testing on males, so he set his sights on females-more unique genetic makeup. And Phoebe? She was the only female in maximum security. Easy pickings.”
He tapped a jagged red line spiking across the screen. “They didn’t want her dying on them mid- experiment, so they carved out most of her pain receptors. Then they slammed insectoid eggs straight into her spinal cord.”
Margaret’s skin crawled.
Implanting bug eggs in a living person’s spine? Who the hell even comes up with something that twisted?
Right then, the creature in the tank stopped its random twitching.
Its head-still barely recognizable as a beastman-turned slow and jerky. Its clouded, milky eyes locked straight onto Margaret, right through the glass.
“Mar-“A garbled, gurgling sound squeezed out of its throat, thick with slime.
Cheiron’s face stayed blank. He reached out and slammed a red button on the control panel.
High-voltage electricity shot through the tank’s base. The monster seized up hard, then crumpled back into the puddle of slime with a wet, heavy thud.
“She’s still conscious?” Margaret’s eyes went wide. She took a half-step back.
“Barely. Just basic animal instincts left.” Cheiron’s tone was flat, unfeeling. “Eating. And… hating you.”
Margaret sorted through the facts in her head, fast. “Greven went through all this trouble to break a B-class female out of prison and turn her into this? What’s the endgame? He is trying to build an army of monsters to fight the insectoids?”
“Not an army. He’s trying to build the perfect being.” Cheiron paused, working through the logic out loud.

“Insectoids have tough bodies and insane lifespans, but no spiritual power. Beastmen have powerful spiritual power, but they spiral out of control way too easily. Harold’s whole endgame with his research? He wanted to combine the best of both. Make something that never breaks.”
