She was stunned, not expecting the old man to have such a strong reaction. For a moment, she was too surprised to speak.

The old man let out a hearty laugh. "Well now," he said cheerfully, "this is my very first New Year’s gift this year."
It wasn’t just to his liking; it swept away the last trace of loneliness in his heart.
