Chapter 10

Three months later, Sebastian still managed to find them.

He stood outside the gate, peering through the gaps in the fence, and saw Yvette and Christopher accompanying Annabeth as she blew soap bubbles. Annabeth chased after the colorful bubbles, her laughter ringing out. Yvette sat in a wicker chair, a faint smile lingering at the corner of her lips.

That smile was something Sebastian had not seen in a very long time.

He felt as if a fine needle had pricked his heart, and he reached out to push open

“Annabeth.”

Annabeth turned around, saw him, and froze, whispering, “Daddy…”

the gate.

The smile vanished instantly from Yvette’s face. She picked up Annabeth and softly said to Christopher, “Take Annabeth inside first.”

Christopher glanced at Sebastian, nodded, and carried Annabeth into the house.

Only the two of them remained in the yard.

“How did you find this place?” Yvette’s tone was very calm.

“If I want to find you, I will,” Sebastian looked at her, his Adam’s apple moving, “Yvette, let’s

talk.”

“There’s nothing to talk about.”

“I’ve investigated Lilian’s matter and handled it thoroughly,” Sebastian stepped forward, his voice urgent, “I know I was wrong, truly. Come back with me, let’s start over.”

Yvette shook her head, “Sebastian, we ended a long time ago.”

“It’s not over!” Sebastian raised his voice, “You still care about me, I know it. After so many years as husband and wife, how could our feelings just disappear?”

“Feelings?” Yvette laughed, exhaustion filling her smile, “Sebastian, feelings aren’t you coming back to me with a kind face after you’re tired of playing. Feelings aren’t you crossing the line again and again while I pretend nothing happened. Feelings aren’t you nearly getting Annabeth

killed, then thinking a simple ‘I was wrong’ can erase everything.”

She looked at him, speaking each word clearly, “I don’t love you anymore. I stopped loving you long time ago.”

Those words cut deeper than any knife. Sebastian staggered back half a step.

“Did you fall in love with him?” He pointed toward the house.

“That’s my own business.”

“Annabeth is my daughter!”

“Legally, custody belongs to me,” Yvette’s voice remained calm, “You signed the papers.

Sebastian remembered the document he had signed without even reading it carefully, and regret gnawed at him.

“Yvette, give me one more chance…”

“I’ve given you too many chances,” Yvette interrupted him, “Every time you promised to change, every time you only got worse. Sebastian, I’m tired, truly tired.”

She turned to walk toward the house.

Sebastian grabbed her wrist, “I don’t believe you don’t care about me. Back then, we…”

“Back then was back then,” Yvette pulled her hand away, “Now I want to live my own life. You should… live yours well, too.”

She went inside and closed the door.

Sebastian stood outside the door for a long time.

He was unwilling to accept it. When had Sebastian ever lost? Why should he lose to a mere

teacher?

He began coming every day. Waiting outside the yard, waiting outside the clinic, waiting outside the kindergarten. Yvette ignored him, so he watched from afar.

He saw Christopher picking up Annabeth from school, saw him and Yvette shopping together at the market, saw the two of them sitting in the yard in the evening, drinking tea and chatting. That kind of ordinary warmth was something he once had, but never cherished.

The regret in his heart grew like wild grass, choking him until he could barely breathe

That afternoon, Yvette and Christopher took Annabeth to the newly opened children’s park.

Sebastian followed them from a distance in his car, watching as Annabeth held her mother’s hand in one and Christopher’s in the other, her eyes crinkling with laughter.

He felt as if something inside him had been twisted hard.

When they left the park, night had already fallen. Yvette carried Annabeth, who had fallen asleep from exhaustion, and walked side by side with Christopher toward the parking lot.

Just then, a black SUV without license plates suddenly sped out from a side road, its engine roaring, heading straight for them!

Sebastian instantly recognized the face behind the wheel-Lily! Her hair was disheveled, her eyes bloodshot, her face twisted with crazed hatred.

Without time to think, he jerked the steering wheel, slammed the accelerator to the floor, and swung his car sideways, blocking the SUV with all his might!

“Boom-!!!”

The violent crash exploded in the air.

The airbags deployed instantly, hitting his face. Sebastian felt a sharp pain in his ribs, and warm blood trickled down from his forehead.

Using all his strength, he turned his head and, through the spiderwebbed shattered window, saw Yvette holding Annabeth tightly, both standing unharmed where they were.

Christopher spread his arms, shielding them securely behind him.

Yvette was looking at him, her eyes wide open, her face drained of color, filled with shock and… fear.

He wanted to say, “Yvette, don’t be afraid,” but his throat was full of blood, and he could not utter a single sound.

Before his consciousness faded completely, his last thought was: perhaps this was for the best.

At least, they were safe.
