Chapter 37 Lines Drawn
“I just want to stay close to Gregory and Celestine,” Viola said quietly.
Cassian had been watching everything without missing a beat. “If you want to study overseas, Ill handle it.”
Viola’s eyes lit up. She rushed forward and looped her arm through his. Her face glowed with excitement. “Cassian, you’re so good to me. Really, you don’t have to-”
She didn’t finish.
Cassian’s gaze dropped to where her hand was gripping his arm. His voice turned flat and cold. “Let go.
Viola stiffened and awkwardly pulled her hand back. Of course. Cassian hates being touched. Always has./No exceptions.
“Well… the university’s already settled,” she added quickly. “I’m staying at Valedawn University. They’re offering a generous scholarship, plus a direct bachelor’s to master’s track. So, it’s kind of a rare opportunity.”
Cassian nodded.
She’d grown up in this house, and academics had never been anyone’s concern. She’d always handled school on her own.
Valedawn University was a top-tier international school anyway. It wasn’t inferior to any prestigious oyerseas institution.
Still. This newly returned sister seemed a little too eager to interfere. Was she relying on her biological status to start giving orders in this house? D
That rubbed him the wrong way.
And that day Jack brought her home, she’d gotten so caught up in herself that she forgot everything else, leaving an elderly man worried sick.
Hardly impressive manners.
Maybe he should stay home a few more days. Get a proper look at this so-called sister.
About ten minutes later, the car pulled into the Drayven Estate garage. Victor supported Viola as they walked, while Cassian followed behind, expression unreadable.
After settling her into her room, Cassian fetched the first-aid kit and did a quick bandage. Victor took the hint and slipped out, thoughtfully closing the door behind him.
Viola looked up at the man in front of her. Sharp features, effortless presence. Her heart started racing.
She remembered what her best friend had told her. She took several deep breaths, then lunged forward and wrapped her arms around him.

“I like you.” she blurted out. “Can I marry you?”
Cassian’s face darkened instantly.

His eyes flicked to the nightstand, to the half-finished glass of red wine. He picked it up and poured in straight over her head..
“Ah!” Viola let go, clutching her soaked hair in shock. “Cassian…”
He looked down at her, cold and distant. “You’re drunk.” That’s the only explanation for this kind of nonsense.
Just then, the door slammed open with a bang.
Both of them turned.
“You little brat, how many times did I call you,” Celestine snapped as she stormed in. “I told you to come back and you ignored me. Were you trying to push me to lose my temper—”
She froze. Viola stood there, drenched, hair dripping. But it hadn’t rained today. Cassian stood nearby. face rigid, an empty wine glass still in his hand.
The sharp smell of alcohol hung in the air.
“Celestine,” Viola said softly, her head lowered like a child who’d done something wrong. Her voice trembled.
Cassian’s expression eased slightly. He set the empty glass back on the cabinet, though his face remained grim. “I have things to take care of. I’ll come back another time.”
With that, he turned and strode out, pulling off the clothes he’d been wearing when she grabbed him.
A servant approached from the opposite direction. “Sir.”
Cassian tossed the clothes over without stopping. “Burn them.”
“Yes, sir.”
Celestine had been around long enough to know the signs. And with how Viola usually acted around her, it didn’t take much to put the pieces together. One look, and she could pretty much guess what had gone down.
She picked up a towel, gently drying Viola’s hair, her expression complicated. “Viola… I know it’s hard t really do. But…”
She wanted to say more. The words stalled in her throat.
In the end, she could only sigh. “Feelings don’t work on force. Some things just come down to timing.
Viola felt miserable. She muttered something about taking a shower and hurried into the bathroom. shutting herself away.
