“I’ve been watching that girl. She carries herself like she’s from old money. Definitely not from an ordinary family. But…”

Cassian’s voice was cool and even. “But what?”

“There’s just one thing,” Zachary said thoughtfully. “Her last name’s Vale. As far as I remember, there’s no/ major family in Valedawn by that name. It’s odd, right?”

Cassian’s brows pinched slightly. “And what, your pretty-boy tactic didn’t work?”

Zachary nearly choked. Of course his brother had to twist the knife. No mercy at all.

He scowled. “It was going great-until some punk texted her mid-conversation and ruined the vibe. She was about to say yes. And then boom, WhatsApp ping-vibe gone. That little bastard. If I ever find out who it was, I swear I’ll skin him alive.”

Cassian, who was very much the bastard in question, didn’t even flinch. He hadn’t expected his own brother to be out for his blood.

Zachary tried again, hopeful. “Hey, how about we swap targets? You let me back out of this one, and I’ll owe you big.”

Cassian didn’t even hesitate. “Sure.”

Zachary lit up like Christmas. “Thanks! That’s all I needed-bye!”

“Pack your bags before you go.”

Zachary froze mid-step. His gut dropped.

“Alex’s still overseas in Tanelle. He says he can’t stomach the food there. You two can switch.”

Panic slammed into Zachary. “Wait, wait, that’s not what I meant-

“I’ll call him now.” Cassian already had his phone out.

“Hold on!” Zachary grabbed Cassian’s wrist, eyes wide, tone painfully sincere. “Cassian, give me a little more time. I’ll win her over, I swear.”

Cassian stayed stoic. “I’m not forcing you.”

Zachary gave a strained laugh. “Totally voluntary!”

At Draycroft Hospital, Seraphina reviewed the pre-op evaluations. All vitals were stable. The patient was ready for their fifth surgery.

She had just finished briefing Ashley when the office door slammed open. Alaric strode in dragging a young man by the collar like a misbehaving teenager.

Seraphina blinked. “What’s going on?”

Alaric beamed. “Seraphina, I know you’re not taking anyone new on this one. But let me pitch someone. My grandson-he’s a cardiothoracic surgeon at the hospital. Let him assist you. He needs the experience.

She just stared at him.

Alaric barked at the young man, “Say something! Be polite, soften your tone!”

You’re so damn clueless. At this rate, you’re gonna be single forever.

Julian had grown up in a top medical family. And it showed-he was brilliant, but arrogant.

He’d never seen his strict, old-school grandfather act this respectful toward anyone, especially not a girl half his age. But he’d heard about the surgery. The one that had made headlines.

It left him curious. Just who was Seraphina to earn that kind of praise from a man like Alaric?

“Will you say something already? This is a once-in-a-lifetime shot. If you let this slip, the whole family’s going to lose it.”

Julian’s face darkened, a visible flicker of disbelief crossing his expression.

The so called miracle comeback, and now he was supposed to play assistant to her?

Was Alaric out of his minds?

She nailed one surgery and suddenly she’s untouchable. Did it really need to be blown this far out of proportion?

Julian sighed inwardly. “Hi, Dr. Vale,” he said through gritted teeth. “I’m Julian Sable. I’d be honored to assist you.”

Alaric paused, clearly surprised his grandson had finally said something smart. He even gave a subtle thumbs up.

Seraphina glanced at Julian, her expression unreadable. Just as she opened her mouth, a voice cut through the room like a blade.

“He can’t be her assistant.”
