Faced with his mother’s questions, Sebastian kept his expression neutra! He had no reason to hide anything from his parents.

He walked over and took a seat in a nearby armchair, explaining plairily, It was nothing serious, really. I just made it clear that if they kept creating obstacles about adding Riley to the family trust, then i’d walk out and establish my own branch of the business.

His tone was even, but the impact of his words landed like a tremor through the room.

Sebastian looked up at his somewhat stunned parents, the ghost of a cold smile touching his lips, and went on, They know perfectly well that I control the core of Torres Group’s operations now. If I wanted to, I could spin off assets and restructure anytime –leaving them with an empty family name and a hollow shell of a company. There’s nothing they could do to stop me. Once they realized that, they became a lot morereasonable.

Wayne, who had been sipping his coffee nearby, choked hard before he could swallow. He coughed until his face flushed, pointing a finger at his son but unable to form words.

Truth was, when he’d insisted on marrying Miranda years ago, the family elders hadn’t made it easy for him eitherthey’d thrown their weight around and set up all sorts of hurdles. And back thenhe’d used pretty much the same playbook on them.

Now, seeing his son not only mirror his own demeanor but pull the same power move, Wayne felt a messy swirl of pride and irony. This kid was definitely his own flesh and bloodthat reckless, allin determination to protect his wife was exactly the same.

Watching her husband struggle, Miranda hurried over and gently patted his back. Honestly, at your age, must you be so dramatic?she chided lightly, though her eyes were warm. Your son just handled something important, and here you are having a

fit.

Wayne finally caught his breath, adjusting his collar with a slightly embarrassed shrug. Just got carried away, that’s all,he covered. I’m gladtruly. Now that Riley’s place in the family is settled, of course I’m happy as her fatherinlaw.

Miranda, unaware of her husband’s own past rebellions, simply took it as genuine relief over their daughterinlaw.

She turned to Sebastian, her tone sincere and moved. Anyway, I’m glad it’s resolved. Once the birthday gala is over and the paperwork is finalized, Riley will officially be part of this family. That girl’s been through a lot over the yearsnow that she’s married in, we must make sure she never feels unwelcome or slighted.

Then, as if remembering something, she glanced out at the clear spring day and added, You’ve done what needed doing. Don’t stick around here with us old folks. In a little while, take her out for a drivemaybe up the coast or through the hills. Let her get some fresh air and see something besides these four walls. No reason for her to stay cooped up indoors all day.

Sebastian gave a slight nod, a faint trace of warmth in his expression. I know, Mom. It’s already arranged. Once she wraps up her work for the day, I’ll take her out.

Before he could leave, however, Wilson appeared at the doorway.

As soon as he stepped inside, his eyes landed on Sebastian, who was still seated off to the side. Wilson offered a thin, measured smile. Seb, there you are. Perfect timingI’ve run into a snag with one of my projects and wasn’t sure who to turn to. Since you’re overseeing the group’s operations now and have a keen eye for these things, why not join me in my study? We’ll have some coffee, and you can give me your thoughts.

His tone was polite, almost practiced.

But given the tension Sebastian had caused in the boardroom that morning over Riley’s status, the invitation clearly carried an

undertone.

Sebastian didn’t move orrespond immediately.

Wilson’s expression stiffened almost imperceptibly.

What’s the matter?he asked, his voice taking on a pointed edge. Still holding this old man’s earlier objections against me? You won’t even do me the courtesy of sharing a cup of coffee in my own home?

Sebastian honestly had no interest in humoring him.

But while Sebastian could afford to brush off the formalities of family politics, his father Wayne couldn’t ignore them as easily.

Seeing the interaction turn strained, Wayne stepped in smoothly.

Mindful that Wilson was still a senior member of the family, he broke the silence with an easy, diplomatic smile. Wilson’s coffee is always worth the tripeveryone in the estate knows that. Since the opportunity’s here, I’ll gladly invite myself along for a cup.

Wilson looked momentarily surprised.
