Carson looked up at Warren, his gaze deep and unreadable, a faint smirk playing on his lips. "Is Andrew really too terrified to even pick up the phone and call me himself? Making you jump through all these hoops for him?"
Being so bluntly called out for his ulterior motives in buttering up the Evert family left Warren incredibly awkward. "I genuinely don't think my cousin is to blame for what happened. His aunt was completely misled when she picked that fiancée for him. He never wanted the arrangement in the first place."
Carson lowered his eyes, his smile turning frosty. "I understand he wasn't happy and wanted to sabotage the engagement. He just went about it the wrong way."
A chilling edge crept into his voice. "Honestly, the fact that your cousin was willing to cross every line just to get rid of a woman is almost impressive."
Sitting nearby, Marina listened, her mind racing in shock.
She had been there the day little Kya was bullied at the eco-park. Until this very moment, she had assumed Andrew was just collateral damage, dragged down by his unhinged fiancée. But hearing Carson's words, she realized the entire fiasco had been Andrew's calculated scheme.
Andrew had been dating a school teacher. His family despised the match, forcing him to get engaged to Susanna Murphy instead.
Knowing exactly how arrogant and toxic Susanna was, Andrew deliberately brought her to the eco-park gathering. He knew full well that everyone there was untouchable, and he knew Susanna couldn't help but cause a scene.
A cold shiver ran down Marina's spine. The depths of these people's manipulations were far beyond what any normal person could fathom.
So this was the real reason Carson had permanently exiled Andrew from their social circle.
It wasn't because Susanna's actions had simply embarrassed Andrew. Carson was furious about the cold-blooded calculation behind it.
Warren frowned, lowering his voice in a desperate plea. "Mr. Foster, I'll be straight with you. My cousin honestly never expected Susanna to target a child and nearly cause a disaster. He... he..."
Andrew had merely expected Susanna to run her mouth and mildly offend Estelle Macclain or Magdalen Sampson. Given how fiercely Jonathan Lamont, Morrison Langston, and Charlie James protected their women, even a single wrong word from Susanna would have guaranteed her banishment from J City high society.
The engagement would have been instantly voided.
But he grossly underestimated Susanna's sheer malice. In the end, he took himself down right along with her.
Carson perfectly understood Warren's defense, but the damage was done. There was absolutely no universe where Andrew would ever earn Charlie's forgiveness.
Marina gave a slight nod and walked out with him.
Once they stepped outside, a thought struck her. "Did Andrew end up with his girlfriend?"
If he was willing to orchestrate such a massive scheme for her, they must have been deeply in love.
Carson turned around. Under the soft glow of the streetlights, his striking features looked utterly flawless. "No. His family adamantly refused and paid to send the girl overseas."
Marina's lips curled into a wry smile. "So Andrew plotted all of that, only to lose everything anyway."
Carson wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his side. His smile was devastatingly handsome. "Which is why we have it so much better. Perfectly matched, completely in love, and everything naturally falling into place."
Marina placed her hands on his shoulders, tilting her head up. "Who is completely in love with you?"
