Marina frowned before she even turned around. She took a slow sip of her drink, pretending she hadn't heard a thing.
Shania Dalton marched right into her line of sight, glaring daggers at her.
Marina turned her head toward the window, continuing to ignore her.
"Are you deaf? I'm talking to you!" Shania snapped.
Marina finally put on a look of mild realization. "Oh, I heard someone talking, but I assumed you were calling someone else. After all, if you were addressing me, I figured you'd show a little respect to your future cousin-in-law."
Shania flushed with embarrassment. "You're not married yet. No need to force titles."
"Fair enough. Then 'Ms. Evert' will do nicely," Marina replied, the picture of perfect patience.
Shania rolled her eyes. "Where is my cousin?"
Marina blinked innocently. "No idea!"
Shania scowled. "My cousin brought you to this event to help him socialize, not to stand in a corner stuffing your face!"
Marina let out a soft laugh. "And in what capacity are you interrogating me, Ms. Dalton?"
Shania was left speechless.
She scanned the room, her eyes suddenly widening in shock. "Who's that woman standing next to my cousin?"
Marina followed her gaze and was genuinely startled. Carson was actually at the reception.
A stunning woman in a black, diamond-encrusted gown was clinging to his arm. The two were deep in conversation with a group of guests. The woman leaned subtly against his shoulder, her gorgeous figure and sultry face making them look like a picture-perfect match.
Shania put the pieces together, a smug, gloating smirk spreading across her face. "So you aren't his plus-one after all."
"He—" Shania choked on her words, stammering before finally snapping, "Someone is seducing him! If you won't protect him, that's your fault!"
Marina stared at her.
What kind of twisted logic was this girl raised on?
"He's a grown man, not a helpless saint, and I'm not his bodyguard. How exactly am I supposed to protect him?" Marina asked.
"If you can't protect him, I will!" Shania declared. She suddenly lunged forward, grabbed Marina's arm in a vise grip, and began dragging her straight toward Carson.
"Hey! Hey!" Caught off guard, Marina stumbled before regaining her footing. She looked around frantically and hissed, "Shania, if you want to play hero and save him, go right ahead! Why are you dragging me into it?"
Despite wearing stilettos, Shania marched at a terrifyingly brisk pace, her fingers digging into Marina's arm. She threw a cold glare over her shoulder. "I'm going to show you how it's done!"
