A Few Hours Ago.
Verity:
"What’s going on?" I asked the maids outside the left wing.
They all seemed pretty anxious, standing around Lady Lucille’s room and holding trays of food.
"Lady Lucille is being difficult again," one of the maids said, making me frown at her.
"You do realize she’s the Alpha King’s grandma, right?" I said to the maid, reminding her not to use certain words for an old lady who was definitely going through some stuff.
And I knew that because even last night, when I was in Ragnar’s room, she had stayed awake the whole night before coming to his room to find comfort.
But knowing the history between the two, I could already tell Ragnar had dismissed whatever worries she had.
"Give me the tray," I said as I took the breakfast tray out of the maid’s hands.
I knocked on the door, then asked one of the maids to knock again.
"I said I don’t want to eat," Lady Lucille called from inside.
The maids shared a glance and stifled their laughter. They only stopped when I gave them a harsh glare.
"Go. I’ll take care of it," I said to the maids, who walked away whispering and murmuring.
"Lady Lucille, it’s me, Verity. I also need to speak with you about Jenna’s mate ball," I called, my fingers curling around the tray.
"Come in," she called after giving it some thought.
I had to balance the tray on one hand while opening the door.
The minute I stepped in, I found a very distraught old lady sitting against her bed’s headboard, with all the windows in her room open.
"Good morning," I said, even though it was way past morning.
I put the tray down and decided to sit with her while I buttered some toast for her.
"You’re not eating lunch. It’s lunchtime," I joked.
But when I lifted my head, I noticed the old lady staring outside one of the windows all the way from her bed, looking really upset and low.
"Is everything okay?" I asked, watching her force her eyes back to me.
"When you grow old, people just toss you aside. It’s like everything you say is an exaggeration."
I didn’t know why, but her words cut deep.
"Well, that’s not only for old people," I commented, watching her frown at me. "Omegas go through the same thing. Nothing they say is ever trusted. It’s always just an exaggeration."
I remembered how none of my complaints had ever been met with justice.
Flashback.
"What the fuck?" Julia asked once we were at my home.
I was still shaking from the encounter with Oliver and his father.
I buried my face in my hands and started to bawl in front of her.
"Hey, come on, relax," Julia said, wrapping an arm around me and rubbing my arm, trying to comfort me.
