In the lead transport vehicle, Elias Ashford took the passenger seat. Debbie was sandwiched in the back between two guards, one of whom was Lucas.
Her severed wrist was heavily bandaged and secured in a sling. She looked utterly drained, subtly leaning her weight toward Lucas.
She kept shooting him anxious glances, desperately wondering when Bella's crew was going to hit them.
Doubt was creeping in. Did Bella actually have the firepower to pull this off?
There were three vehicles in total. A lead SUV running point, the transport vehicle in the middle, and a tail car providing cover.
It was a heavy escort. Lucas gave her a subtle, reassuring look.
"Relax, Ms. Harris," Lucas said smoothly. "We'll have you delivered to your son in no time."
Debbie scoffed, keeping up her arrogant facade. "Who's tense? Do I look tense? Whether you get me there or not is your problem. You think you can afford to let me die?"
She didn't believe a word of his comfort.
Honestly, no matter where they dumped her, the ransom money was already secured in her account. Why should she panic?
She had also done the math. If Bella's ambush failed, that wasn't her fault. Bella wouldn't get a dime. The cash was locked under Debbie's name. Even if Bella had stolen her ID and debit cards, so what? She could report the cards stolen and order a new ID. If Bella botched this, Debbie would walk away with the full $1.2 billion. That was the ultimate win.
So no, Debbie wasn't panicking.
Ending up in her son's custody was a setback. He might exile her to her rural hometown, or worse, ship her overseas. But as long as she had millions of dollars to her name, she could buy her way out of any hellhole.
