Bella's head whipped toward Lucas. Her immediate thought was that he had set her up.
After all, he had connections to the casino, and the Sapphire Enforcers had been tearing the city apart looking for Debbie.
"Did you bring them here?" Bella hissed.
Lucas backed away, shaking his head frantically. "No! Are you crazy? I want my $40 million! Why would I bring them?"
His logic held up. The casino wouldn't pay him a fraction of what Bella was offering. He wasn't stupid enough to sabotage his own payday.
Bella took a sharp breath, her eyes darting around the ruined cabin. She knew the layout better than anyone.
As the shouts outside grew louder, Lucas began to panic. "What do we do? If we get caught, this is a major crime! Are we going to jail?"
The word 'jail' snapped Bella back to reality like a slap to the face.
She glanced down at Debbie, who had passed out again after a few agonizing screams. Before the amputation, they had secured a tight tourniquet around her forearm. Blood was still pooling rapidly, but the bleeding wasn't catastrophic yet.
Lucas had already dumped half a bottle of styptic powder onto the severed stump and was pressing down hard with thick medical gauze.
"Pick her up!" Bella ordered. "We need to hide."
Lucas stared at her in disbelief. "Me? Carry her?"
Bella's temper flared. "Who else? Me?"
Obviously, she didn't have the physical strength. Lucas rushed over and tried to heave Debbie onto his back, but her dead weight was impossible to manage. He strained and grunted, but Debbie barely budged.
Bella realized with disgusted clarity that Lucas's impressive physique was purely cosmetic. His sculpted chest and abs were useless in a crisis, likely drained by endless nights of drinking and entertaining wealthy women.
If they wasted another second, they were going to be caught red-handed.
Bella couldn't afford to be exposed. She had a reputation to uphold.
