After reading the text, Bella Ward fired a quick message back to Lucas. "Don't mess this up."
Lucas's reply was instant. "Relax."
On the other side of town, Lucas pulled a thick stack of cash—two thousand dollars in crisp bills—and shoved it into the pocket of his courier buddy.
"Thanks for doing this, man," Lucas said. "Dinner is on me once this is done."
Back when they were both working the floor as high-end club models, Zane Booth wouldn't have looked twice at a couple of grand. But after a botched cosmetic procedure ruined his face, Zane's lucrative nights had ended. Relegated to delivering packages, his income had tanked. Two thousand dollars was weeks of hard work now.
Seeing Lucas's generosity, Zane grinned. "Don't worry about it. You always look out for me, man. Consider it handled."
Lucas patted his shoulder. "I owe you."
Zane casually tossed the package into his bin alongside the rest of the deliveries for the Blake Group. He had specifically traded shifts with a coworker just to handle this route for Lucas. He was dying to know what was inside a box worth a two-thousand-dollar tip, but survival instincts kicked in. He had been around the block enough times to know that some secrets were better left alone. If it was trouble, ignorance was his best defense. If it was just a rich guy's game, he was two grand richer anyway.
Following standard protocol, Zane smuggled Lucas's package into the Blake Group's headquarters. After dropping the bulk of the mail in the lobby lockers, he leaned over the front desk.
"I'm covering a buddy's route today," he told the receptionist. "What's the protocol for the boss's mail? Lockers, or...?"
