Survival of the fittest. Strictly business, with absolutely no room for personal favors.
Perfect.
Ethan grinned broadly as he opened the car door for Lillian, seamlessly sliding in some flattery. "Ms. Mercer, my admiration for you grows by the day. Anyone else would've been sweet-talked by the Mercers and ended up getting played."
"Two years in prison is more than enough to make you immune to sweet talk," Lillian said flatly. "Alright, no need for the reminders. I know exactly what I'm doing. If there's a trap ahead, we just walk around it. Simple as that."
Her confidence completely put Ethan at ease.
They all headed home in their separate cars.
Back at the restaurant, the Mercers and Winthrops relocated to a quiet, private lounge to talk freely.
Brandon suddenly realized something and turned to his father. "Dad, remember a while back you mentioned someone who could influence Lillian stepping in to help? Were you talking about Beatrice?"
Hearing this, Beatrice quickly waved her hand. "Oh, I wouldn't dare claim such a thing.
Look at Lillian now. She's built an unparalleled status for herself; she's practically untouchable.
She's no longer the little girl trailing behind your grandmother.
What power do I have to influence her?"
Martin felt a complex twinge in his chest hearing Lillian's success praised so highly. She was, after all, his daughter. Still, he had to keep up appearances.
"You're being too modest, Beatrice. Given your history with my mother, Lillian will definitely give you face.
I hear your factories are hoping to partner with her?
Soon, we'll all be one big family again."
Beatrice offered a polite smile. "The partnership is far from finalized.
I'll just treat it as putting on a show for Lillian.
I refuse to believe she'll keep making things difficult for me after I go to such lengths."
Beatrice nodded in approval. "Good. I'm glad you're willing to see the bigger picture.
My only concern is that your wife at home might not be so agreeable."
If Sabrina found out she had to grovel to Eleanor every single morning, she'd probably wish she were dead.
But Brandon confidently brushed it off. "Lillian already dropped the demand for the shares. If Sabrina can't even agree to this, then even I won't tolerate her anymore.
Don't worry, Beatrice. Our family will get this done."
Beatrice nodded. "That's a relief. As long as it gets done."
