Chapter 30
Vivian’s breath caught.
He looked… different. Sharper. Harder. Like something inside him had calcified overnight.
Sophie moved first. She crossed the room and wrapped her arms around his waist, pressing herself against his side. Possessive. Triumphant.
“Ethan, baby, I’m sorry-” She looked up at him with wide, apologetic eyes. “She just barged in-”
Ethan didn’t push her away.
Vivian’s stomach lurched.
“Ethan -” Her voice came out strangled. “Ethan, what are you – this isn’t – she drugged you, she set you up, you can’t possibly -”
“Vivian.” His voice was flat. Dead. Like talking to a stranger at a bus stop. “I’m going to ask you one
question.”
She stared at him.
“Am I your replacement?”
The air left the room.
Vivian’s lips parted. Her eyes darted to Sophie, then back to Ethan.
“At the celebration dinner,” Ethan continued, his tone unchanged. “I heard someone say it. That I was Damian Hale’s replacement. A stand-in. A consolation prize you settled for because the man you actually wanted threw you away.”
His jaw tightened. “Sometimes, when I’m feeling vulnerable, I told myself it wasn’t true. I told myself it’s just other people’s opinion, not yours-even though you’ve proved them right time and time again.”
He looked at her.
“So just say it. Tell me what’s on your mind. Am I really nothing more than a placeholder to you?”
Silence.
Rain hammered the windows. Sophie’s arm tightened around Ethan’s. Vivian stood in the hallway, soaked, bleeding from a scratch on her cheek, and she couldn’t speak.
She couldn’t deny it.
Because it was true.
Ethan watched her silence stretch – one second, two, three- and something behind his eyes went out. Like a pilot light extinguished.

He laughed.
It was the worst sound Vivian had ever heard. Short. Quiet.
“Three years.” He said it to himself more than to her. “Three years of cooking your meals. Washing your clothes. Taking your family’s shit with a smile. And the whole time – the whole time I was just keeping
the seat warm for Damian Hale.”
“Ethan, that’s not -”
“It’s exactly what it is.” His voice hardened to steel. “And I’m done.”
He reached into his back pocket and pulled out a folded document. He held it up – Vivian could see the court letterhead, the official stamps.
“I filed for divorce litigation yesterday. You’ll be served by end of week.” He tucked the papers away.” We’re finished, Vivian. Not separated. Not on a break. Finished.”
Vivian’s chest cracked open.
“You – you can’t just ” She stepped forward. “Ethan, you’re angry, I understand, but this she’s using you, can’t you see that? She’s manipulating you to get back at me -”
“Get out.”
“- and you’re falling for it because you want to hurt me, you want to punish me, but deep down you still –
“Get. Out.” His eyes were glacial. “Don’t make me say it a third time. You’re interrupting.”
Sophie pressed closer against him, a small smile playing on her lips.
Something inside Vivian snapped.
Not into surrender. Into fury.
She straightened. Her chin lifted. Rain dripped from her hair onto the marble floor, and her eyes burned
with a heat that could melt iron.
“You’ll regret this.” Her voice was low. Controlled. Deadly. “You think you can throw me away? You think you can replace me? I am Vivian Lockwood. I built you. I kept you alive when you had nothing.”
Ethan said nothing.
“You will come crawling back.” She pointed at him, finger trembling. “And when you do when you’re on your knees begging – I will make you wish you’d never been born.”
She turned on her heel.
The door slammed behind her.
