AMELIA’s pov

“You don’t go anywhere near my Luna and pup.” Ryder roared and rushed forward to stand between me and the crowd again.

The sound of his voice was loud and cracked through the air like thunder. So sharp and commanding was the intensity it was enough to make even the bravest wolves hesitate.

The ground shook with his strength and shield, and everyone who once tried to come close, took several owering step back.

“He’s strong.” Someone said in fear, and they were right. Right then, Ryder was excluding great power and strength, in spite of the injury he’d gotten earlier.

“Just look at you.” Camille sneered, looking between Elijah and I, “Just how many men have you had to seduce to get your way in life?”

I looked at her like she was out of her mind. No point asking her where she got her ideas from. She was obviously completely crazy.

Her eyes were wild with jealousy. I had never met a more twisted and ugly.

“I just know you use your body to gain advantage, otherwise you wouldn’t be Ryder’s mate. I would!” she yelled, sounding half mad, “I should be Ryder’s mate, not you!”

“loony bin.” I spat, and turned away from her. She was just so resentful.

“Help! Help me!” Jasper cried suddenly, turning every attention toward himself. He was clutching his wound as though his life force was slipping away. And I had to hand it to him, his theatrics were completely spot on.

He staggered forward dramatically, coughing up blood like some tragic hero.

It was so easy to believe that he was seconds away from death.

But everyone knew evil like him had nine lives.

“Everyone, you need to attack them! Kill them if you must!” he yelled.

“Do you not see she’s holding a rare poison?” One person asked.

Dozens of eyes dropped to the pouch in my hand like it was a ticking bomb.

“Then find a way to steal it from her, but you have to steal that puppy!”

“In your dreams.” I muttered, holding on to both Noah and the poisons I was holding on to, then I slightly nudged Ryder to get his attention, “you need to get out of here.” I urged him and he raised a brow

“That’s not going to happen.” He said simply and I sighed.

“You’ll get more hurt. I don’t want you to waste your life on me.” I didn’t feel I was worth all that.

But he ignored my worries and reached for my hand and held on to it tightly.

His palm was warm and steady. So steady that it made my chest ache.

“Being here, with you, isn’t a waste of my life. I’m not leaving you here alone, Amelia. And don’t you worry about me,

because I promise I’m not even remotely weak.”

Are you sure?” I asked with uncertainty, and he nodded reassuringly.

“I am. And besides, You are my Luna, and Noah is the blessing that came from the bond we share. I’m going to protect the both of you with my life.”

There wasn’t a hint of hesitation. No doubt or fear. Just raw certainty.

“He seems even stronger now.” one of the onlookers said, “How on earth are we supposed to attack him?”

“who would dare to even get close to him?”

I heard what they said and I couldn’t help but wonder if everything Ryder said was true, and if he really/meant to take Noah and I back to the tribe to live with him.

I didn’t have the memory of the life we once shared together, but if everything he said about our love was true, then he was hopelessly devoted.

No one faked devotion like this. Not while they were bleeding and possibly risking death.

I looked at our linked hands, and wondered about the poison I held. I was more than ready to use it against our enemies today, but I didn’t want Ryder to get hurt because of it. Would his great strength be able to withstand it?

Ryder leaned forward and kissed my forehead, drawing me out of my thoughts.

“I promise you, Amelia, I will strive to give you all that you wish for. After all, you are my Luna.”

I nodded and slightly, and looking up to meet his eyes, I felt this great inexplicable rush of love.

Could that have been a fragment of the love I felt for him before I lost my memories of us? I wasn’t sure, but right then, it really seemed that way.

“But I don’t understand.” I whispered, “Why are you helping me?”

“It’s not very hard to understand, Amelia.” He said, smiling softly, “I do all this because you are my Luna. And you might not remember this, but we had a marking ceremony under the witness of the moon goddess…”

“The moon goddess…” I murmured and suddenly had a flash of a memory of me wearing a white dress, holding hands with the man before me.

We were both smiling, happy…. And in love.
