Sylvia paused, finding it odd as well. Who would go out of their way to call her assistant instead of just dialing her cell phone? Pressing the button to connect, she lifted the receiver to her ear. "Hello, this is Sylvia Moore."

Sylvia's grip on the receiver tightened. It was Steve's mother, Ella. She did not offer her usual polite greeting and chose to remain completely silent.
Ella did not seem to mind the cold reception and simply continued speaking. "I heard you and Steve are back together. Is that true?"
Sylvia offered a flat murmur of confirmation.
