With a soft click, Steve closed his laptop and tossed it onto the coffee table in front of him. Leaning against the back of the sofa, he stretched out his long legs and let a lazy smile pull at the corners of his mouth. "This is my place. Where else would I be if not here?"
Sylvia's expression instantly turned incredibly dark. "I never asked you to bring me to your place." Her voice was freezing cold, her defensive posture resembling a hedgehog with all its spikes raised.
Steve raised an eyebrow, stood up from the sofa, and closed the distance between them, stopping just a few feet away. "Ms. Moore, let's be reasonable here. Who was it that got completely blackout drunk last night? You are lucky I brought you here and protected your reputation. If you had run around alone and someone else had picked you up off the street, the consequences... So you should be thanking me right now, not looking at me like I took advantage of you."
Sylvia glared at Steve coldly, her sharp gaze looking as though it could pierce right through him. Things were definitely not as simple as he made them out to be. Her assistant Sophia had been with her last night, and Sophia could easily have taken her home. Why did she end up at Steve's place of all places?
Seeing her expression grow colder and her eyes watching him like a thief, Steve sighed inwardly. "Alright, stop glaring. You hardly ate anything last night. Come over and have a bite to settle your stomach."
Sylvia refused coldly without a second thought. "I am not eating!" She just wanted to leave this awful place immediately.
Sylvia stared at him, her chest heaving slightly with anger. Meanwhile, Steve had already picked up a ladle and was unhurriedly serving the steaming hot soup into a white porcelain bowl. A wave of suspicion washed over Sylvia. Had he poisoned the food? But on second thought, if Steve really wanted to do something to her, he could have easily made his move yesterday when she was completely defenseless. He didn't need to wait until now and waste all this breath. A faint, cramping pain rippled through her stomach again. Ultimately, Sylvia surrendered to the demanding emptiness left behind by her hangover. She walked over to the dining table with a cold expression, pulled out the chair farthest from Steve, and sat down.
Watching her avoid him like the plague, Steve sighed once more. He stood up and placed the bowl of soup he had just served right in front of her. Then he spun the glass lazy Susan, bringing several light, refreshing side dishes to a stop directly in front of Sylvia. Looking down, Sylvia's eyes fell on the steaming soup. Dotted throughout the golden, soft millet were finely diced carrots. She looked up and shot Steve a look of pure astonishment. Others might not know, but she knew perfectly well.
