It was the cornerstone of Steve's empire, the investigation and law firm he had built from the ground up. Sylvia slumped back onto the sofa, entirely bewildered and deeply unsettled. How could this possibly have anything to do with Summit Investigations? Or rather, how could it have anything to do with Steve?
After the humiliating chaos they endured before their divorce, they weren't supposed to have any more contact. The man was arrogant and egotistical to the extreme. If he had done something like this behind the scenes, how could he possibly keep his name out of it? Given his vile personality, he should have marched right up to her, parading his grand gesture and mocking her from his high horse, demanding to know how she planned to repay him for saving her life. Why would he... quietly arrange for someone to take care of her for days without taking the credit?
It was far too out of character. It was so abnormal that Sylvia suddenly felt she understood Steve even less than before. She had no idea what kind of sinister trap that deeply calculating man was brewing, waiting to make a fool out of her and enjoy the spectacle. Sylvia gripped her phone tightly, but ultimately chose not to confront him. After all, she had long since blacklisted every single one of his contact numbers.
The days slipped by in a blur of endless work. In the blink of an eye, Christmas was fast approaching. The Westside Plant project had concluded flawlessly, elevating Agri-Tech Ventures to entirely new heights. Not only had they relocated to a much larger office space, but their employee headcount had visibly multiplied.
With the company's rapid expansion came an exponential surge in labor contracts, commercial non-disclosure agreements, and vendor disputes. As a result, the standard legal counsel they had previously retained was completely unequipped to handle the overwhelming workload. The company had nearly suffered a catastrophic legal blow over one or two glaring contractual loopholes. Learning from this painful mistake, Sylvia resolved to hire a top-tier legal advisor, regardless of the cost.
But over the past few days, she had flipped through dozens of resumes provided by headhunters and conducted several rounds of interviews, yet she had failed to find anyone with the necessary expertise and commanding presence to anchor the firm.
That afternoon, Sylvia was massaging her aching temples, staring in frustration at a pile of discarded resumes. The door to her office burst open, and her young assistant ran in, her face flushed with excitement.
Hearing this, Sylvia's heart gave a violent thump. A one hundred percent win rate? Special counsel for conglomerates? If they could secure talent like that, Agri-Tech Ventures would never have to worry about legal issues again. Sylvia stood up eagerly. "Where are his documents? Bring them to me right now!"
The assistant rubbed the back of her head sheepishly and pointed toward the door. "Um... I don't have his files. His aura is incredibly intimidating. He said he has to hand his resume directly to you, Ms. Moore. I put him in the VIP lounge."
Sylvia figured that all elite professionals had their own unique quirks and demands. For the sake of the company, she didn't mind playing along. She immediately marched briskly toward the lounge.
