With the deafening boom, the entire garden seemed to be struck by magic. The dark corners that had been deliberately left empty suddenly flared to life without warning. Layers of dreamy electronic candles, looking like a dazzling galaxy fallen to earth, snaked their way along the white cobblestone path right up to their feet. Countless pure white helium balloons, tethered by rhinestone studded ribbons, swayed gently in the winter breeze. Above them, massive custom fireworks continued to launch and detonate in rapid succession, sending a cascade of golden meteor showers raining down from the night sky. Beneath their feet lay a sea of flowers blooming out of season, surrounded by warm starlight and flickering candlelight. The atmosphere was pushed to the absolute extreme of beauty, magic, and brilliance, so romantic it felt as if one's breath had been stolen away.
Emmy and James were both left completely awestruck by the ultimate fantasy of the moment. They looked up at the spectacular fireworks, then turned to scan their surroundings. Neither had imagined that her mother and Andrew would set up such a breathtakingly beautiful scene.
Standing to the side, Laney could not contain herself. She bounced on her toes, screaming with excitement. "Wow. It is so gorgeous. This is so beautiful." She frantically pulled her phone from her pocket. "No, no, I need to take a picture and post it on my social network right now. This is absolutely unreal."
Teresa was quick. She grabbed Laney's arm, laughing as she lowered her voice. "Calm down. Just watch closely." She nodded toward the center of the venue. "You will have plenty of time to take all the photos you want later."
Laney paused, looking over with utter confusion. Just then, James suddenly withdrew his gaze, turned to Emmy, and dropped to one knee.
In almost the exact same second, Emmy pulled out the dark blue velvet ring box she had been hiding behind her back.
A muffled pop echoed through the air. A hidden mechanism in the tree canopy was triggered, and a storm of bright red rose petals cascaded down like romantic red snow. Immediately following that, a soft hiss filled the air as a ring of brilliant sparklers ignited around the outer edge of the white cobblestones encircling the couple. The crackling silver sparks boxed them into the very center, pushing an environment that was already too beautiful to be real to an even crazier peak of romance.
Their voices rang out in perfect unison against the backdrop of the fireworks. This synced reaction deepened the smiles in their eyes. Even Teresa and Andrew, standing on the periphery, could not help but laugh, their eyes brimming with gratification.
"Oh my god," Laney screamed, her scalp tingling with excitement and her voice practically cracking. "You two really are a match made in heaven. Even your proposals collided. This is the scene of the century." She held up her phone with both hands, her face flushed with thrill. "I am recording this. Hurry, hurry, keep going."
The drifting rose petals settled on James's broad shoulders. Kneeling on one knee, he looked up at the woman before him, his gaze filled with deep affection and doting love. His Adam's apple bobbed, and his voice was husky and lined with a smile. "How about you let me go first?"
