Emmy took them by the hand and walked over to the crib. Little Manny was fast asleep, his face no bigger than a palm, glowing with a healthy flush. Dolly stood on her tiptoes, clinging to the edge of the crib, her eyes wide as she stared at him for a long time.
"Wow, he is such a tiny person." She turned to Emmy and asked innocently, "Mommy, can I play with him?"
The nurses and maternity caretakers in the room couldn't help covering their mouths to hide their giggles. Joey, however, furrowed his little brows, inspecting his brother with a look of utter disgust.
"Mommy, why is he a tiny person? I wanted a little puppy. Can we exchange him for a puppy?"
As soon as he said that, the entire room burst into laughter. Emmy was highly amused as well, crouching down patiently to explain it to them.
"Your brother is not a toy, and we cannot trade him for a puppy. Just like you, he is a baby born from Mommy's tummy. When he gets a little bigger, he will be able to run and play with you."
The two toddlers listened, seemingly understanding but also a bit confused. Even though they were a little disappointed they couldn't trade him for a dog, they quickly accepted their soft, squishy little brother. They happily circled the crib, generously piling all the toy cars and plush dolls they had brought right next to the bed.
"Hurry up and grow big so we can play together."
Time flew by. In the blink of an eye, Emmy had been resting at the maternity retreat for two full months. The season had quietly transitioned into winter, and Christmas was fast approaching. Over these two months, even though she hadn't actively kept up with the news, she couldn't escape Abriella, the ultimate gossip, frequently dropping by to visit. Because of this, Emmy already knew all about the massive shake-ups James had orchestrated recently. However, every time Abriella finished whispering her gossip, she always nervously added a warning to keep it secret so James wouldn't scold her.
It wasn't until Emmy was getting ready to return to work that James brought her into the study. Sitting in his leather chair, he pulled her onto his lap. With his arms wrapped securely around her waist, he rested his chin naturally on her shoulder.
James's eyes darkened, a casual, cold smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. "You could say it was me, but you could also say it wasn't." He rubbed his thumb against her waist, his tone as casual as if they were discussing the weather. "Martha's son always despised her domineering nature and sickening control freak tendencies. I merely put him in charge of securing the donor heart. He failed to deliver it in time on his own. He has no one else to blame."
Emmy couldn't help but click her tongue. "You really know how to play people." Then, remembering something else, she pressed on, "What about Brian? Did he really flee the country?"
James scoffed, a chilling sharpness flashing in his eyes, feeling no need to hide the truth. "He has made plenty of enemies out there over the years by throwing the Nelson family's weight around. I did not even need to dirty my own hands. All I had to do was leak his whereabouts, and naturally, someone else took care of him for me."
Emmy clicked her tongue again. "Right, what about Isabel? She put Tyler Nelson in a vegetative state, but she suffered a mental breakdown herself. What happened to her?"
"The Summer family didn't dare stay in the Capital," James replied flatly. "They relocated the entire family overseas. Isabel is receiving treatment abroad as well."
